To say the Cincinnati Bengals giving both Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins monster contract extensions has been controversial would be an understatement.
For Bengals fans, the conversation is a non-starter—the Bengals got it right while keeping Joe Burrow happy. In Cincinnati, especially, keeping the star quarterback happy is a pretty important point.
But not everyone agrees. One analyst accused the Bengals of getting it wrong, while a former head coach actually ripped Burrow for the contract signings.
Colin Cowherd landed in the middle on a recent "The Herd" episode, saying the Bengals performed a necessary evil.
"Letting them go is so bad for the locker room, sends such a bad sign to free agents, draft picks, coaches, scouts," Cowherd said. "I think it's the right move."
But Cowherd also said this when it was pointed out that the Bengals are the only team paying $28 million or more per year to three different players: "They will not win a Super Bowl because of it."
Top-heavy teams like the Philadelphia Eagles winning it all with similar roster construction is an anomaly, not the norm. It requires excellent drafting and contributions from rookies, though, which has been a major problem in Cincinnati over the last few years.
Still, to say it will prevent the Bengals from winning it all is easy to dismiss. Burrow has already been to a Super Bowl and factors like simple bad luck stopped his MVP-like showing from going to the postseason last year. They need to draft well, but the NFL salary cap is always jumping, so they have wiggle room to keep adding to the roster.
That's not to say it will be easy. But the Bengals are investing big and doing it in the right players necessary to stand a chance at all.
