Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach addressed the media via Zoom on Thursday to discuss the free-agent signing of running back Elijah Mitchell and compare him to former third-down running back Jerick McKinnon.
“(Jerick McKinnon) was a guy that had a great career in Minnesota (Vikings), went to the Niners (San Francisco 49ers), and just couldn’t get healthy, couldn’t get right, was always banged up. We’re like, ‘(Elijah Mitchell is) still young, and although he’s battled a lot of injuries, we’ve always liked the tape,” said Veach. “We’ve always liked the person, great kid.’ Similar skill set in a sense. He’s explosive. He has great hands.“
Mitchell, who played for the San Francisco 49ers, was a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft. As a rookie, he rushed for over 1,000 yards and six touchdowns in the regular season and playoffs.
“It’s no secret with him that he’s got to stay healthy. He’ll have to get through training camp and a season healthy,” said Veach. “But our trainers like what they saw in regard to his rehab from his injury last season. And so hopefully we can get him on the field, keep him on the field because I think when he’s healthy, he provides an explosive dynamic in both the run and pass game.”
Mitchell missed the entire 2024 season due to a hamstring injury and has also missed time in previous seasons with various ailments. He signed with Kansas City, hoping to resurrect his career and boost the running back room.
