GOODYEAR, Arizona – The Cincinnati Reds have signed catcher Jose Trevino to a three-year, $14.925 million contract extension, sources confirmed Thursday.

Trevino, a 2022 All-Star and Platinum Glove winner, was acquired in a trade from the New York Yankees in December for pitcher Fernando Cruz.

An exceptional receiver who has earned raves from his manager and pitchers this spring, Trevino opened camp as the backup to Tyler Stephenson but will open the season as the Reds starter as Stephenson works his way back from an oblique injury.

Trevino's new contract keeps his current arbitration-level salary for this year in place and adds two guaranteed seasons plus a 2028 club option year.

The breakdown:

  • 2025 – $3.425 million
  • 2026 – $5.25 million
  • 2027 – $5.25 million
  • 2028 – $6.5 million club option ($1 million buyout)
