Marketplace lands new Cine Capri
Garin Groff, Tribune

The East Valley has landed a clone of the legendary Cine Capri — only one slightly grander than the others.

Harkins Theatres has started building the latest version of the giant movie screen at Tempe Marketplace, where 16 screens will open June 29. This theater will seat more than the other Valley Cine Capri, the Harkins Scottsdale 101, seating 620 instead of 604.

The theater will also boast a better sound system and the screen may be even a foot or so wider than the Scottsdale 101 version, company owner Dan Harkins said.

A Cine Capri screen is about 70 by 30 feet. Harkins said he knows of only one or two larger screens in the nation.

Regardless, Harkins looks forward to having another location in the Valley with such a big screen.

“The best news is that now there’s a possibility that two event films can be released at the same time, at both Cine Capris,” Harkins said.

The Cine Capri is a re-creation of a single-screen theater built in 1966 at Camelback Road and 24th Street in Phoenix. Its massive screen, gold drapery and spacious seating wowed audiences until it closed in 1998 to make way for midrise office buildings. The public rallied around the Cine Capri in its final days, and Harkins built a similar version at Loop 202 and Scottsdale Road. He also has brought the concept to Denver, Oklahoma City and Dallas.

Harkins initially wasn’t sure how the theater — wellknown in the Valley but not elsewhere — would catch on. But the Cine Capri has become the premiere place to see movies in other communities, he said. “They all became hits the day they opened,” Harkins said.

Nothing will ever duplicate the experience of the original, but this is good news for movie viewers.

First film is likely to be Live Free or Die Hard.

The original was great. The new one seems a little GENERIC but it's still nice. I will definitely go to the Tempe one if they build one. It's much closer to me living in the East Valley. Great news.

excellent. i loved the original one and the new one at the 101 doesn't really compare, but i think it's cool that they are building another.

btw - my office sits above the site of the old one... :(
