Isaiah Wilks fought to keep his emotions in check as the final buzzer echoed throughout State Fair Arena.

Millwood’s star guard bent over, taking a moment to absorb the magnitude of the moment.

A whirlwind of thoughts flooded his mind — last season’s devastating state title loss, the countless hours of hard work over the summer and the recent loss of a close friend.

But as teammate Jonathan VanBuren walked over and wrapped him in a hug, those heavy thoughts transformed into pure joy, bringing a wide smile to Wilks’ face.

Millwood won its 18th state championship in program history with a 60-57 win over Cascia Hall in the Class 3A boys basketball final Saturday.

The Falcons were led to glory by Wilks, who finished the day with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Amari Barrett chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds and Jonathan VanBuren added 12 in the win.
