Mar. 21—ABERDEEN — The deck was stacked against Freeman even before the opening tip.
Even without leading scorer David Walter — who was out with the flu — Freeman was still able to defeat Aberdeen Christian 52-44 in the Class B boys state consolation round on Friday at the Barnett Center.
Freeman's defense played a leading role in the victory. The Flyers held the Knights to only 35% shooting from the field, including a 7-for-22 mark in the second half. Freeman's perimeter defense was even better, holding Aberdeen Christian to only 15% from the 3-point line, while also forcing the Knights to turn the ball over 19 times.
"We wanted to get back to playing with passion and love for each other," said Freeman head coach Lance Friesen. "I didn't think we felt real comfortable last night, and that's maybe credit to Viborg-Hurley. But our adjustments tonight were taking care of the ball better, getting reversals so we get some post touches and defensively, we cleared the boards better, especially early."
Tate Sorensen led Freeman's efforts with 17 points and seven rebounds. Tayden Kerrigan was a force on both ends, finishing with 14 points, six steals, five rebounds and three assists. Luke Peters ended his day with 12 points and three rebounds. Brooks Jett led Aberdeen Christian with 16 points and rebounds and Luke Kaiser added 12 points, three rebounds and three assists for the Knights.
Freeman (20-5) moves on face Wall in the Class B fifth-place game at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 22. Aberdeen Christian (18-7) takes on Lyman in the seventh-place game at noon.
After trailing by as much as 16 points in the second half, Wall mounted a furious comeback to defeat Lyman 59-55 in the Class B state tournament consolation round on Friday.
The Raiders were in full control heading into the second half, going on a 14-0 scoring run to go up by 12 points at the start of the second quarter. Out of halftime, Lyman pushed the lead to 16 points before Wall turned the tides.
The Eagles finished the third quarter on a 19-6 run and going into the final eight minutes, the Raiders' lead had shrunk to only three points. With six minutes remaining in the fourth, Wall tied the game at 50-50 and later jumped ahead for its first lead since the early part of the second quarter.
The two teams traded leads for the next three minutes with someone eyeing an edge. With Lyman leading 55-54 with under a minute to go, Wall finished strong, scoring the final five points to advance to the fifth-place game on Saturday.
Teelan Kjerstad and Emmet Dinger combined to score 39 of Wall's 59 points. Kjerstad led the Eagles with 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. Dinger added 17 points and two steals. Wall also forced 25 Lyman turnovers.
