UNCASVILLE – The top-seeded Northwest Catholic girls basketball team won its third straight state championship, this time in Class L, with a 56-40 victory over No. 2 seed Bethel Saturday night at Mohegan Sun.
Juniors Abby Casper (19 points, 19 rebounds), Maeve Staunton (18 points) and Zoe Canning (six points) have won state titles in all three years of high school. Northwest Catholic (25-2) won the Class S championship their freshman year and the Class MM championship last year.
Staunton scored her 1,000th career point in the third quarter Saturday. She needed 10 points to reach the milestone.
Vivan Stewart led Bethel (23-4) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Emma Huedepohl , who had 10 points, scored her 1,000th point in the fourth quarter.
Bethel trailed 36-33 at the end of the third quarter but Northwest Catholic went on an 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter and pull away from the Wildcats.
