I read an article from Paul Coro at azcentral dated 9-24-12 regarding Clyde Drexler's opinion of the new Suns. See link below. Clyde may have been in the sun too long but it's nice to hear something besides doom and gloom about the newly formulated team.

Clyde Drexler, you have the floor.

"They've got a real team now," Drexler said in initiating a discussion about the Suns while attending the Jerry Colangelo Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Classic in Litchfield Park last week. "They can really play. You already got (Marcin) Gortat. Now, you got (Luis) Scola. You got (Goran) Dragic. And you got (Michael) Beasley. You've got three new starters coming in who can play."

But Glide, most people are saying the Suns will not be a playoff team and ESPN's pundits figure on them being the second-worst team in the conference.

"What?!" Drexler said with slightly less shock than when Jake O'Donnell ejected him for protesting a second-quarter foul in a 1995 playoff game at Phoenix. "Are you kidding me? If they don't get the fourth or fifth playoff spot, I'm not standing before you. They're big. They're athletic. They know how to play."

Could Clyde Drexler be even close to right?

I think he definitely could be right. I don't know that he is but I really have to laugh at anyone that is POSITIVE about what we'll be. This team is the biggest mystery to take the court that I've seen in many years. I think it's probably a safe bet that we won't be contending for a title as we have no true superstar but anything other than that is conceivable IMO, including worst record in the league.

This is an odd team. The pieces are there to be a really good team. A lot is hanging on Beasley. If he turns a corner, things could be really good. If he becomes a black hole and locker room distraction, Gentry could be looking for a new job.

I'd be shocked if this team didn't take some time to put it together. I'd be shocked if they do. The only person I feel certain that will be on the team for next years camp is Dragic. It should be an interesting next few years to see how the Suns draft/trade/signings. I'm sure I'll still watch the games whether their horrible or not, but it's the front office who I'm watching and rooting for the most during this period.

Clyde Drexler thinks Scottie Pippen was better than Michael Jordan. Nuff said.

Wasn't Clyde Drexler briefly the coach at Univ. of Houston? And didn't he fail miserably because he was an awful judge of talent?

Here's how I rate the Suns. There are 30 starters at each position in the league, so I break them into ten groups of 3 players. Group 1 is the best three and so on to group 10 is the 'worst' three. All the other players are group 11. The average team is going to average 5.5 for its starters - a mathematical necessity. I rank our best players: Gortat 4 (in spite of lacking stamina), Dragic 5, Scola 6, Dudley 8, Brown 10. Everyone else is 11. Our starting five average is 33/5 or 6.6. The team is really going to have to gel to play .500 ball, or, of course, some of our 11's are going to have to play far better than they ever have in the past.

I would have said the same thing about the Orlando Magic a dozen years ago when a bunch of unheralded players came out of the gate strong and shocked the league. I think they only ended up around .500 that season but that was far above the preseason predictions. Maybe this group can win a Coach of the Year award for Gentry like the Magic did for Rivers.

before i read your i post i was thinking the same thing, that we might come out strong and surprise some people since this is pretty much a new nba team hitting the floor. seems like the rest of the nba is already established. hopefully we don't get figured out as in years past when we were strictly nash-ball. it'll be interesting to see what style we end up with.

gentry is a good coach with whats been given to him, i'm optimistic and expect this team to overachieve much like the rest of gentry's teams.

I expect chaos on offense and flashes of decency on defense surrounded by long stretches of WTF.

As I have said before, the Suns season revolves around Dragic. If he is not ready to run the Suns offense and play defense as expected, he will never be ready. If Dragic can rise to the occasion the Suns should be better than expected, maybe even a playoff team. If not the Suns will crash. It's strange, even with the departure of Nash, I think the Suns could be stronger at the PG position considering depth with the addition of Marshall. Yes, I know it is early. Again, it all depends upon Dragic to lead the way.

Also I think the Suns front court immediately improved from last season with the addition of Scola.
