Madalyn Deiter was near the mountaintop as a freshman.

In her sophomore season with C.M. Russell High wrestling, she reached the summit in dominant fashion.

Deiter, the first girls’ state wrestling champion for the Rustlers, is the Tribune Girls’ Athlete of the Winter Season.

In February 2024, Deiter reached the 114-pound state finals in Billings and fell to undefeated champion Kaura Coles of Kalispell Glacier — a grappler who also took another title this past season.

Even after finishing her freshman season at 31-4 as the Class AA state runner-up, Deiter didn’t rest up in the offseason.

“I think getting second as a freshman was a good accomplishment, but it wasn’t what she was after,” CMR head coach Aaron Jensen said. “She used that as motivation and put in a really good offseason, traveling to big national tournaments and training for those and just making sure she was better this year than she was last year, and she definitely was.”

Deiter kicked off her sophomore season with an undefeated record heading into Christmas break, taking her second CMR Holiday Classic title of her career in late December.

She hit a stumbling block at the Tom LeProwse Invite in Bozeman to start off 2025, losing by first-round pin to Missoula Big Sky’s Lucia Schlapfer in the semis before rallying to take third at the tourney.

Following the loss, Jensen said he didn’t see a defeated athlete, but one filled with even more motivation.

“I think it was a good lesson for her that she has to be ready for every single match, and I saw her preparation get a lot better after that loss,” Jensen said. “Sometimes losses can be a blessing, and I think that was for her.”

It was only two weeks later that Deiter earned the chance to avenge the loss to Schlapfer, doing so by technical fall in the semifinals of the Hellgate Girls Tournament in Missoula, where she took the invite championship at 125.

Deiter won the Eastern AA title in early February before meeting Schlapfer in the 125 finals at state, taking a hard-fought match by pin in the third round.

The victory earned Deiter the first-ever state wrestling championship for a CMR girls’ grappler since the sport was sanctioned by the MHSA starting in 2020, and ended the year with a 33-1 record.

The numbers have been improving each year on the girls’ side for the Rustlers and at the club level, Jensen said, and Deiter’s state title should be another boon for participation in the young sport.

“It’s good to have a role model to say, ‘You can do it here at CMR, you can do it through this program,’” Jensen said. “I think that’s going to help, having someone to look up to and see that they can reach that here at CMR as well.”

Deiter is not only a champion athlete and hard worker on the mat, Jensen said, but is a leader in many facets as she is also a very dedicated student.

“She’s definitely a leader for both (boys’ and girls’) teams, being a state champion,” Jensen said. “But she’s also an honor roll student, she’s involved in the music program. She’s just a very well-rounded kid, and I think that’s what we want all our student-athletes to be is to get the most out of their high school experience with extra-curricular activities and be the best you can at them. She’s a very good role model for that.”
