Look Who's Back! NBC Orders Coach Revival With Craig T. Nelson

http://www.tvguide.com/news/nbc-orders-coach-revival-craig-t-nelson/

Coach is getting back in the game. The network TV game, that is.
To the surprise of many, NBC is reviving the beloved sports sitcom, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

Coach ran from 1989 to 1997 on ABC. The sitcom centered on Hayden Fox (Nelson), the head coach of the fictional college football team the Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles, and later on, the fictional NFL team the Orlando Breakers.

The new season, which will run for 13 episodes, picks up 18 years later when Fox comes out of retirement to become an assistant coach to his own son, who is the new head coach of a team at an Ivy League school in Pennsylvania.

Series creator Barry Kemp will write and executive-produce the show's return, and Nelson will also serve as an executive producer. It is yet to be announced which other cast members will return, and when the new episodes will premiere.

Jerry Van Dyke is a bit up in years but he still works and Bill Fagerbakke is doing pretty well as the voice of Patrick on Spongebob so I don't know how available he'll be. Shelly Fabares hasn't done much in years so I think they can woo her back. I'll give this a bash but 18 years is a long time between series' and the show might have lost it's charm. Especially if Luthor isn't around.

I hope the Ivy League setting doesn't screw it up. I'm afraid Hollywood is less likely to make intellectuals look like buffoons.

It's a network comedy... Everyone will look like buffoons.

I take it you've never watched The Big Bang Theory?

Or Silicon Valley... Or Frasier... Or 30 Rock... All of those shows have intellectuals as their leads and they're all played for the butt of jokes. Pretty much any half hour comedy ever does the same. Comic writers don't take ANYTHING seriously and love taking down intellectuals probably as much as anyone.

It's a shame then. Because oversimplifying it as simply taking down intellectuals is severely cutting short the brilliance of a show like BBT or how brilliant Frasier was.
