Because there’s been some commentary about it, and because we’re getting ready to move on to Week 2, I wanted to break down three more offensive series, one from the first half with Skelton that was successful, and two more unsuccessful Skelton series from the 3rd quarter.

I know that there are a lot of people who want me to run through a defensive series. If I have time tonight or tomorrow, that’s what I’ll do next.

• Arizona Cardinals at 11:20
• 1-10-ARI 42 (11:20) 26-C.Wells left tackle to ARI 43 for 1 yard (99-A.Branch).
12 personnel with Fitz split wide left and Roberts lined up short on the right outside of King and Heap (both in three-point stance). Beanie’s set up awfully deep in the backfield—7 yards from the LOS.
Seattle is in their base 4-3 defense. Fitz’s man is in press technique and the opposite corner is set up 10 yards off the LOS. Free safety is deep with eight men in the box.
Heap goes in motion as an H-back, but stays on the right side of the formation.
Snyder pulls left and Heap follows behind him. Batiste kicks left and Colledge drives his man toward the middle of the field.
Massie gets put on roller skates and driven left across the formation before Heap can even reach the line of scrimmage because he’s not a very good football player.

• 2-9-ARI 43 (10:42) (Shotgun) 19-J.Skelton pass deep right to 85-E.Doucet to SEA 39 for 18 yards (29-E.Thomas).
20 formation with Fitz split left and 2 WR right.
Seattle has 5 men on the LOS (3 DL and 2 LBs) and seven in the box with a safety creeping up over the slot receiver for nearly 8.
Outsider cornerbacks in press technique while the free safety cheats to Fitz’s side of the field.
Four man rush and everyone drops back into coverage. The LOLB drops to cover the flat. Sherman stays in to block and LSH runs a circle route.
Seahawks D plays a Cover-1 with man coverage underneath.
Good blocking by the OL here.
Fitz runs a 12-yard comeback to 9, Doucet runs a 15-yard in, as does Breaston.
Skelton throws high but Early corrals it for the catch.

• 1-10-SEA 39 (10:00) 26-C.Wells right tackle to SEA 37 for 2 yards (50-K.Wright).
Cards line up in 12 personnel tight bunch formation left with Fitz split wide right with Skelton under center with Beanie lined up 8 yards deep of the line of scrimmage.
Seattle has seven defenders in the box within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Fitz’s defender is in press technique. The strong safety is within 8 yards of the LOS and the opposite corner is at the same depth outside of the bunch.
Free safety is high.
Skelton does a check at the line and maybe reverses the action of the play.
Run is off tackle with no apparent pulling blocker. Actually sets up pretty well. Massie here does a good job sealing off the outside end, but Adam Snyder gets turned around. Colledge doesn’t engage his man long enough at the second level, who slides across the formation to make the tackle. For some reason, Colledge falls down. This is probably our best offensive lineman.

• 2-8-SEA 37 (9:22) 19-J.Skelton pass short left to 87-J.King to SEA 32 for 5 yards (29-E.Thomas).
Cards line up in 12 personnel with Fitz on the right and Roberts on the left.
Seattle has 8 men in the box with both corners playing press technique and one safety deep.
King motions into the backfield offset left.
Play action with a six-man rush, both receivers are pressed at the line of scrimmage, although Heap gets a free release.
Defense plays Cover 1 with man under.
Heap, Fitz, and Roberts all run vertical routes, but the coverage is there. Skelton dumps it off to the flat.
Good blocking by the offensive line, probably poor play design on the outside routes. Not sure if Skelton is supposed to chuck it up to Fitz here, or what. Everyone’s single-covered.

• 3-3-SEA 32 (8:38) (Shotgun) 19-J.Skelton pass short right to 85-E.Doucet to SEA 18 for 14 yards (25-R.Sherman).
11 personnel out of shotgun, Sherman to Skelton’s left. Receivers left to right seem to be Doucet, Fitzgerald, Heap, Roberts.
Seahawks have seven in the box with four down linemen two linebackers. One safety deep and the outside corners in off-man technique. Should key zone coverage. At the snap the deep safety creeps up and the near safety drops back.
Doucet motions across the formation. Definitely zone coverage.
Cover-3 defense with zone coverage underneath. Four man rush.
Good pass protection, but with six men blocking four, it better be.
Fitz and Heap run crossing patterns, Doucet runs a comeback, Roberts runs a deep route.
Good ball placement by Skelton low and away.

• 1-10-SEA 18 (7:53) 26-C.Wells left tackle to SEA 17 for 1 yard (69-C.McDonald).
21 personnel I-formation with Fitz lined up on the left and Roberts on the right. King lined up in-line.
Seattle has seven men in the box and the free safety is within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. Six defenders are arrayed at the LOS with one deep safety.
King motions right across the formation.
Run goes left between Batiste and Colledge. Good blocking except for Richard Sherman, who decides that he’d best not block anyone. Unsurprisingly, the guy he ran right past tackles Beanie when there was plenty of room in front of him. Beanie could have pressed the line of scrimmage a little harder, maybe.

• 2-9-SEA 17 (7:09) 19-J.Skelton pass incomplete short right to 86-T.Heap [56-L.Hill].
12 personnel with Beanie. Fitz is split left and Roberts right on very narrow splits.
Seattle has eight men in the box with a safety deep and both corners in off-man coverage. Why not audible to a quick screen? No one’s within 8 yards of Fitz.
Heap motions left and now the deep safety has crept up to 12 yards depth.
Six man rush with two blitzers coming from the right side.
Fitz runs a drag route that has no chance. King runs an in route that’s covered. Roberts runs a post right into the deep safety, and Skelton throws it to a well-covered Todd Heap.
This play call had zero chance of success. Skelton did a good job getting rid of the ball, but both blitzers had a free release to him.

• 3-9-SEA 17 (7:04) (Shotgun) 19-J.Skelton pass short middle to 86-T.Heap to SEA 4 for 13 yards (31-K.Chancellor). PENALTY on SEA-31-K.Chancellor, Face Mask (15 Yards), 2 yards, enforced at SEA 4.
21 personnel with Fitz left and Roberts right. Heap is flexed into the slot. Sherman and LSH are the backs.
Seattle has three down lineman and both corners are in press technique. All defenders are within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage milling about.
Six man rush. Roberts can’t get off the press and Fitz definitely isn’t getting double covered (the prevalence of double-coverage on Larry Fitzgerald is wildly overstated at this point). Heap seems to run a 12-yard in and LSH chases him into a six-yard out. EVERYONE is covered and there’s still a safety deep in the middle of the field pressing on Heap.
Really nice delivery by Skelton putting it where Heap can get it.
Offensive line did a great job dealing with the blitz.

• 1-2-SEA 2 (6:39) 26-C.Wells up the middle to SEA 1 for 1 yard (50-K.Wright; 92-B.Mebane).
Jumbo package with Fitz on the sideline. King’s on the right, Housler and Sherman on the left with Beanie in the backfield with Todd Heap.
Seattle has five down linemen.
Heap motions right and down onto the line, Sherman motions offset right into the backfield.
Interior penetration blew up what should have been a good Power-O right for a TD. Colledge pulls right behind the line, but Jeremy Bridges fails to effectively cut the DE, who chases down Beanie.

• 2-1-SEA 1 (6:03) 19-J.Skelton pass incomplete short right to 87-J.King (79-R.Bryant).
Wow. Weird formation. 22 personnel with Fitz in a three-point stance on the right side of the line next to Jeff King. Sherman and Beanie in the backfield, Todd Heap on the right side of the formation.
Sherman motions offset right and no one believes we’re running behind Larry Fitzgerald.
Play action against a cover-2 defense with man underneath. Fitz actually is double-covered and pressed by a linebacker. Everyone’s pressed.
The cornerback on the offense’s right seems to be standing around watching.
Skelton throws a weird off-balance pass to Jeff King that ends up inside of him. King’s open; that should’ve been a TD.
The attempt is weird because he’s trying to throw the ball around Red Bryant, who no one decided to block.

• 3-1-SEA 1 (5:58) 36-L.Stephens-Howling up the middle for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.
11 personnel with LSH in the backfield, Fitz in the slot right, Roberts split left, and Doucet split right. Heap’s in-lineon the left side.
Seattle has four down linemen and 5 DBs with two safeties playing deep.
LSH just barely gets the TD because Lyle Sendlein doesn’t block anybody. Adam Snyder actually blocks two people on this play.

---

• 4-S.Hauschka kicks 65 yards from SEA 35 to end zone, Touchback.
• 1-10-ARI 20 (15:00) 26-C.Wells up the middle to ARI 29 for 9 yards (79-R.Bryant; 99-A.Branch).
12 personnel with tight splits with Fitz right and Roberts left. I formation with Heap as the follback.
Seattle has seven men in the box with a high safety and corners playing off-man.
Heap motions right and lines up in-line, then King moves across the formation and lines up next to him.
The motion brings an 8th man into the box from the defense.
Beanie runs a nice counter to the right side of the line, but his feet get tangled up and he has to fight through more trash than is necessary.
Massie doesn’t have to block anyone and kind of rides Bryant just barely out of the play. If Sendlein could have held his block a moment longer, Beanie would’ve gotten to the second level with a head of steam.

• 2-1-ARI 29 (14:15) 19-J.Skelton pass incomplete short left to 12-A.Roberts (92-B.Mebane).
21 personnel with Fitz and Roberts stacked left and King in-line on the right. Sherman’s offset left.
Seattle has 8 men in the box with one safety deep.
Fitz motions across the formation and the deep corner moves up to cover.
Four man rush and zone coverage behind. Cover-three over the top.
Fitz runs into the short flat at the snap, and has no one around him. King runs a five-yard out, Sherman runs into the left flat, and Roberts a six-yard stick. Where’s the deep route?
Roberts is probably open, but there may have been a mis-communication on the route. Roberts turned in and Skelton threw outside.
No pressure from the pass rush; just a mis-communication between Roberts and Skelton.

• 3-1-ARI 29 (14:11) 26-C.Wells up the middle to ARI 29 for no gain (99-A.Branch; 50-K.)
12 personnel with King and Heap on the left with Roberts split tight. Fitz is on the right split wide.
Seattle has 4 down linemen and eight men in the box. The outside corner is pressing Larry and one safety is deep. The other corner is playing off-man with outside leverage on Roberts.
Adam Snyder pulls left, but Todd Heap can’t block his man in the backfield, and he catches Beanie before he can take advantage of good blocks by Colledge, Batiste, and Snyder.
Ugly.

• 4-1-ARI 29 (13:27) 9-D.Zastudil punts 47 yards to SEA 24, Center-82-M.Leach. 39-B.Browner to SEA 19 for -5 yards (54-Q.Groves; 56-R.Walker). PENALTY on SEA-39-B.Browner, Defensive Holding, 5 yards, enforced at SEA 19.

---

• 1-10-SEA 17 (11:03) 34-R.Williams up the middle to SEA 18 for -1 yards (54-B.Wagner; 79-R.Bryant).
21 formation with Fitz on the right and Roberts on the left with King lined up with Batiste and Sherman offset right.
Seattle has four down linemen and eight men in the box. Fitz’s man is playing press technique, Andre’s is playing off-man, and there’s a safety deep middle.
Roberts motions in to the line and does a good job sealing the cornerback. Unfortunately, he’s the only one who blocks anybody.
This is an ugly play. The run goes right, but Adam Snyder pulls left. Jeff King gets completely turned around by Red Bryant, who is in the backfield before Williams even gets the ball.
But don’t worry, because even if King would’ve been able to block Bryant, Batiste failed to block anyone at all, so his man was also there.
Blech.

• 2-11-SEA 18 (10:21) 19-J.Skelton pass incomplete short right to 11-L.Fitzgerald (31-K.Chancellor).
21 personnel with Roberts split left and Fitz right. King is in an H-back position on the right and Sherman is offset left.
Seattle has eight men in the box with both corners playing press technique and one safety deep.
King motions to the left side of the line.
Five man rush with a SS blitz from the left side.
Neither Roberts nor Fitz are double-covered; Seattle’s playing one-deep with man underneath.
Skelton bails on the pass to Fitz, who’s on a post route into the deep safety. Dangerous pass that he got away with.
Pretty good protection by the OL, but Skelton doesn’t have a lot of room to step up in the pocket.

• 3-11-SEA 18 (10:15) (Shotgun) 19-J.Skelton pass deep right intended for 11-L.Fitzgerald INTERCEPTED by 31-K.Chancellor at SEA 0. Touchback. PENALTY on SEA-23-M.Trufant, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at SEA 18 - No Play.
11 personnel with Fitz and Doucet right, Heap flexed on the left and Roberts on the outside. Sherman is to Skelton’s right.
Seattle has three down linemen with two deep safeties and the corners pressed on Fitz and Roberts. Roberts has outside leverage.
Doucet motions left across the formation and no one follows him. Zone coverage.
Five-man rush with one safety deep. Massie gets completely beaten because he’s still not good, but Skelton moves up into the pocket where the left side did a good job.
Fitz is not double-covered and struggles to beat the press. Roberts gets a free release on a deep route. Doucet runs a five-yard in and is wide open; Heap runs a seam route.
Skelton throws up a prayer to Fitz who now has two defenders in his vicinity, and it’s picked. But do-over.

• 3-6-SEA 13 (10:08) (Shotgun) 19-J.Skelton pass incomplete short right to 12-A.Roberts.
01 personnel with Fitz split right, Heap flexed right, Roberts in the backfield, Doucet and Floyd on the right.
Seattle has five men lined up on the line of scrimmage with one corner pressing Floyd but off-man coverage on Fitz and Doucet and two safeties deep.
Six man rush with two defenders dedicated to covering Larry Fitzgerald. Floyd ends up getting a free release with inside leverage, and so does Doucet.
Skelton has an adequate pocket to work from.
Seahawks have one safety deep and four defensive backs playing zone in front.
Skelton has Doucet and Floyd open on the left, but doesn’t look their way and so ends up getting his pass batted down by Red Bryant, who is inadequately blocked by Bobby Massie, who remains not very good.
Honestly, I don’t know how more open Michael Floyd could’ve been on that play. That one’s going to sting in the film room.

• 4-6-SEA 13 (10:03) 3-J.Feely 31 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-82-M.Leach, Holder-9-D.Zastudil.

------

My final analysis is that it doesn't seem like Seattle is doing anything much different in the second half than they were doing in the first. It seemed like Skelton just got a little rattled and wasn't placing the ball where he wanted to anymore.

I feel a little better about the OL, although when there's one breakdown in this running system, it's a disaster. Didn't see anything special from Ryan Williams.

Ouch.

Thanks for this, I can't understand half of it because I never played football, but I now know more than I did 15 minutes ago.

You want to put a glossary with these? 21 personnel? Cover 1?

All I know is that Cover 3 and Cover 2 are restaurants/sports bars here in Austin.

Now bars? I know all that terminology.

I had a guess on the cover 1... cornerbacks in press cover or 1 playing off. Strong safety up closer to the line. Free safety deep shading to one side or the other depending on WR set...

not sure what the 12 21 personnel groupings mean

D schemes may not have changed, but maybe execution improved and/or protection got worse in the 2nd? Skelton looked SOLID in the 1st half and lost in the 2nd. Which is kinda out of character for him...

In watching the CF tonight I finally realized why LSH is being used at RB so much.

The holes the offensive line creates are so small he's the only guy that can fit through them.

When did we trade for Breaston? :D He sure is a much better #15 though.

After pondering it for the evening, I realized that the difference between the successful drives and the unsuccessful ones isn't something that the Seahawks did--it was something that the Cards didn't do:

The Cards stopped running vertical routes. Vertical routes are important because it creates space for the intermediate routes behind them. Look at the charting data and you'll see that they just aren't there. The secondary in Kolb's drive was playing five to eight yards deeper in their zones than they were with Skelton.

K9 - In your judgment were most of our missed OL blocks due to poor technique? Or was there mainly a consistent disconnect between execution and playbook?

It's hard to say that there was anything consistent, since it was kind of a different person every time. What I can say is it wasn't a case of everyone--or even an individual player--being physically overwhelmed over and over again.

I think it's just a case that there are a lot (a lot) of moving parts in the run-blocking portion of the run game. That can lead to some really explosive plays when everything works right, but it can also lead to high number of opportunities for breakdowns.

What's up with the run plays going in the opposite direction of the pulling guard?

I think that it's a constraint play and a counter play (if that's the design). You don't want the only key that the defense has to read be the pulling guard, so sometimes you run against him.

That's the charitable reading. The uncharitable reading is that Ryan Williams got confused on the play or thought he could cut it back when there was absolutely nothing there.

That happened more than once. I thought for a minute Leland McElroy was back on the team. Well I guess that's better than just plowing into the back of an offensive lineman ala Michael Pittman.
