It is after some deliberation that we've decided to sell our cocker spaniel.

He is an AKC Certified Cocker Spaniel puppy, about 7 months old. All paper works. Only needs shots. He's also got his collar and has the microchip for location purposes.

He goes by the name Ozzie. He's very friendly, is extremely good with kids and is playful, but not rough.

We have to sell him because we can no longer afford to keep him. We're trying to cut costs because my wife is probably going to need knee surgery and with all that's going on there, we can no longer afford to keep him around.

Asking Price: Negotiable (I paid $600 for him when I bought him, and although I'm not going to ask for THAT much for him, I'm looking to sell at around $400-$450 OBO).

Here's some pictures.

Thanks man. I'm hoping to find someone to take him in. He's a nice dog, very friendly to people and great with kids. It's money and apartment issues that are making us sell him.

why don't you just give him away? you have been trying to sell this dog for how long now. If it is due to costs of keeping the dog; if you would have just given him away think about the money that would have been saved over the course of the last few months.

Sometimes you have to just cut your losses and realize just getting rid of him for nothing is going to be better in the long run.

I am not trying to be a jerk here.

All that being said, I really don't see why you haven't been able to find a taker for this guy for at least $100-200. He is really cute.

I assume you have but; have you placed ads elsewhere?

Reason I haven't just given him away is because of the price I paid for him, and the current situation we're in, makes it tough just give him up without getting something in return. When you're in a tough spot, $600 dollars is an awful lot to take a bath on. Back when I bought him, things were financially set, yet preparing for the unexpected usually works for one or two mishaps.. Seems like since January, there's been one right after the other. If I had the ability and the means to give him away, I'd just keep him to be honest. I'm not looking to make a fortune by selling him, just enough to pay a bill or two and keep the wolves off our doorstep.

I am not trying to be a jerk here.

I have put a few circulars around, I'm putting an ad in the Republic, tried to put him on CraigsList a few times (I guess they have a no animal policy now) and put an ad in a few of the free local papers. And trust me, you're not being a jerk at all.

I agree with KPS. The most important thing is to find the dog a good home that will provide proper food and medical care and grooming and exercise and companionship going forward.

The $600 is a sunk cost. You made that decision to spend that much money to buy a puppy and it is your responsibility for the future care of the puppy whether it is in your home or not.

This is not a stock or bond, it is a puppy that needs a loving home. That should be your first priority, not worrying about money.

I never updated the first post Ryan, it's beyond a puppy phase. Besides, to me he's not a puppy.

Yeah I know and I realize that. I'm not going to sell him to anyone that comes in and flashes the greens. Sorry, I'm hurting for money but not to the point where I'm giving him away.

I made a choice to buy it. Thought it'd be a good Christmas gift for my kid, I didn't forsee anything happening the way it did financially. So, yeah I made the choice. Now I'm making the choice to sell. Sorry, but my family needs come before anything else, but at the same time I'm not giving him away to a household of people that aren't going to take care of him. Why do you think I've put so much emphasis on here of trying to sell him? Because generally I TRUST most of the people on here as being decent and I know if someone here bought him, he'd get a decent home.

As for the sunk cost, I really don't know what the going rate for pure bred cockers are these days. I've seen dogs sold in the Republic that were mixed breeds and older dogs sold for more than I'm selling Ozzie for. And yes he gets food. Yes he gets excercise and love here. Trust me, it's not like I've got a Michael Vick dog pit going on.

When I bought the dog in December, I was at a steady and sturdy job.. I didn't expect to get laid off.. I didn't expect my wife to need knee surgery, or our rent to go up almost 100 dollars a month by having him at the start of our new lease. I don't even WANT to sell him, and if I didn't have to, I wouldn't. But things happened I couldn't control. I have to do what I have to do.

Yeah I also know my goal is to find him a good home. Does that mean I should give him away? Sorry. I'm not.

While on the topic, I'm not asking for anywhere close to what I paid for him. I realize the price of a dog isn't going to be astronomical. That's just way it is.

This will be my last post here. I didn't realize it was such a big ordeal to try to sell a dog. Nor did I realize I was going to get scrutinized for realizing I made a mistake and for trying to sell something to pay pieces of a $11,000 dollar surgery.

Take it easy.

Jeez, take it easy. SDJ is in some tough times, let him sell the dog as he feels fit. I've met his wife and daughter and I'm sure it's hard on all of them to sell the dog. A dog is part of the family and if you you knew Jay and his family you would know this is the last thing they wanted. Everyone goes through difficult times and no one should judge Jay for making this difficult decision. Should he sell the dog or keep it and make his wife suffer? Tough times call for tough decisions.

My roomates and I are looking for a dog but they don't want a Cocker so sorry. I'd love to help you out but I'm not the homeowner, I have no say.

That being said, I love the dog but is the pillow for sale? Ha, jk

Sorry I didn't know the whole story. I thought it was just tough to take care of him given his wife's knee surgery and the expense of dog food, vet bills, etc. I really didn't mean to open up a can of worms and have the guy get beat up over selling a dog by asking why he just didn't give it away.

Cocker Spaniels are my wife's favorite dogs. Hers died a few years ago and she has wanted one ever since. We already have 2 dogs, mine is getting quite old and vet bills are already getting a little crazy, and I am not in a financial position to drop a few hundred on another dog. Believe me, I have contemplated helping out Diamondback Jay since he first posted this thread. I just really can't and knowing the reasons why he must get rid of this dog makes me want to help even more.
