Legendary Valley sports executive Jerry Colangelo, who brought baseball to the desert and built the Arizona Diamondbacks into a World Series champion, will retire as the team's chief executive officer.

The organization's ownership group has hired sports agent Jeff Moorad to come onboard Sept. 1, and he will assume full CEO duties on Jan. 1, 2005, when Colangelo retires.

"We have an opportunity to bring a super-talented, long-term baseball person onboard," said Ken Kendrick, a Valley businessman and a major investor in the Diamondbacks. "He (Moorad) is one of the most respected player representatives in baseball, and he has a passion for getting into ownership."

Colangelo could not be reached this morning.

The team is expected to announce the changes during a press conference this afternoon.

Moorad, a UCLA graduate, is one of the most powerful sports agents in baseball, having negotiated deals for Boston's Manny Ramirez, Los Angeles' Shawn Green and Arizona's Luis Gonzalez.

Hmm.

I guess this could mean one of two things:

1. JC is serious about retiring for good; or
2. The other owners finally got tired of his (baseball) incompetence and canned him.

Either way, I don't think this hurts the Suns any.
