So players can now profit from their likeness, name and image. Not exactly what I had in mind when I was hoping college athletes would get enough to get them through college. I have always felt college athletes should get something but this seems like it could be a slippery slope without some serious cap of dollars earned.

"Structuring a model for allowing students to monetize a name, image and likeness while maintaining some recruiting balance is one of the biggest and hardest issues that everyone's dealing with,"

Anyone else worried about this becoming the mini-NBA? I know technically this is a college topic but not sure if putting all this money into it won't make it more like the NBA. It's cool of MODS want to move this.

It means that their image, likeness, and name can no longer be used for free by video game companies etc. it opens the door for major payments to college athletes. It changes the game completely.

Good. Now boosters can have events where they pay the athletes to show up and what not.

good for them

I did hear on the radio this morning that the NCAA plans on a cap system where one player cannot be making millions and the other player gets nothing.

I am very skeptical at this point because they also pointed out this is the NCAA and they have no idea how to implement this at this time. That basically this was a feel good release by the NCAA for now.

Its just a can of worms. Schools can line up boosters to give endorsement deals as part of the recruiting process. It might as well be pro ball.

As near as I can tell, players getting payed is already rampant, might as well get it out in the open and try to regulate it somewhat.

Honestly, if they get the shoe companies to do open endorsements with players then it will probably decrease the amount of money that top prospects get in college.

That sounds good in theory but it won’t work. It is like the marijuana situation. It is absolutely cannot be regulated now. It would take a huge government agency to monitor, test, etc the pot explosion. Cops do not even bother.

If you like pot it’s great. But “getting out in the open where you can regulate it” does not make any sense. No one will know what is allowed and not allowed exactly. There will be all kinds of new loop holes. The NCAA will give up enforcing altogether except in a few random unfair cases.

NCAA is now being backed into a corner. CA passed legislation first to pay student athletes who attend CA schools and Romney made threat that government is coming for NCAA. Of course what's to stop NCAA throwing money at Romney to put a stop to that?
