On the same day it retired the jersey numbers of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, Colorado football announced plans to immortalize another towering figure in the program’s history.

The Buffaloes will erect a statue of former coach Bill McCartney outside Folsom Field, the university announced Saturday during Colorado's spring game.

The statue of the Hall of Fame coach will be along the Buff Walk on the east side of the stadium and will be unveiled before a yet-to-be-determined home game during the upcoming 2025 season.

McCartney, who died on Jan. 10 at 84 years old after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease, led Colorado to the most successful stretch in program history, transforming an also-ran into a national power over the course of his 13 seasons in Boulder. Under McCartney, the Buffs went 93-55-5, won three Big Eight Conference titles, and won the program’s first and only national title, in 1990. He’s the winningest coach in program history and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

The statue will be 8.5 feet tall, with McCartney’s likeness cast in bronze while standing atop a granite base. It will be the second statue outside Folsom Field in the stadium’s 101-year history, joining a bust of Fred Folsom, the venue’s namesake.

Along with the statue, Colorado will establish a scholarship endowment in McCartney’s name.

"Coach Mac's imprint on this university transcends his incredible accomplishments on the football field," Colorado athletic director Rick George said in a statement. "This statue and the scholarship created in his honor will stand as a permanent monument to those accomplishments and the many lives he touched during and after his time as head football coach. It also further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to honoring CU football's illustrious past."
