Barnett unaware of report, to talk to AD tonight
ESPN.com news services

Gary Barnett's tumultuous tenure as the University of Colorado's football coach reportedly will come to an end. However, the coach told ESPN.com that his reported ouster from the school is news to him.

Gary Barnett's Buffs were outscored 130-22 in their last three games.

Citing a source close to contract talks between Barnett and the school, the Denver Post reported on Wednesday that Barnett will not be retained as head coach.

The newspaper reported that there is no timetable for an announcement, but athletic director Mike Bohn was expected to talk to Barnett soon.

However, Barnett told ESPN.com's Pat Forde: "No one has said a word to me. I have not heard from one person that that is going to happen. ... Nobody has presented anything to me. I am continuing as if I'm the head coach at Colorado."

Bohn, traveling back to Colorado from meetings in New York, called the report "speculation."

"I don't know about that," Bohn told The Associated Press when asked if the report was true. "It's inappropriate for me to comment at this time."

The University of Colorado Board of Regents is in regularly scheduled official sessions Wednesday and Thursday in Boulder, Colo. A source told ESPN's Joe Schad that Bohn is expected to address the regents about Barnett's future.

ESPN.com learned that Barnett and his attorney met with Bohn on Wednesday night, but Colorado officials said there would be no further announcements.

Barnett and the school had been discussing a contract extension for several weeks, and it was believed to be a foregone conclusion before the season turned south.

Barnett Timeline
1982-83: Head coach at Fort Lewis, Durango, Colo.
1984-1991: Assistant to Colorado head coach Bill McCartney
1992-98: Head coach at Northwestern, Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1995, 1996
1999: Named 22nd head coach at Colorado
2001: Colorado wins Big 12 championship, Barnett named Big 12 Coach of the Year
2002: Colorado wins Big 12 North Division championship
2004: Scandal erupts amid allegations that Colorado used sex and alcohol to recruit football players. Barnett is suspended, then reinstated over disparaging remarks attributed to him about a female player. Multiple investigations end with no sex-related criminal charges. A report criticizes Barnett for lax oversight of players but says he did not condone improper practices.

CU finished on a three-game losing streak, including losses to Nebraska and Texas by the combined score of 100-6.

"The coaches have worked hard and the players have been great. The kids just ran out of juice. My whole extension has been a big issue. I think they felt some pressure surrounding that," Barnett told ESPN.com

Despite a torrent of negative publicity, a suspension from the school and widespread speculation that he would be fired 18 months ago after a controversy erupted surrounding Colorado's recruiting practices, Barnett has taken Colorado to consecutive Big 12 North Division titles.

The president, chancellor and athletic director all stepped down in the aftermath of the scandal, which resulted in an investigation that concluded drugs, alcohol and sex were used to entice recruits to the Boulder campus, though none of practices were sanctioned by university officials.

"Personally, I'm fine. I hold my head very, very high. Through all the crap we've gone through, we've won two division championships. The kids have gotten those championship rings, and they can't take those away."

After Saturday's 70-3 loss to Texas in the Big 12 title game, Bohn told the Boulder Daily Camera, "We all have to look at everything and see what it's going to take to get things going in the right direction. That's what's on everyone's mind right now."

Barnett's take on the loss to Texas: "A lot of people have lost pretty bad to Texas this year."

Barnett has one year left on the five-year deal, which includes a $2 million bonus if he completes the contract. While saying he likes Barnett, Bohn has remained noncommittal about an extension. One of the presumed reasons for the delay is that the school is still waiting for the results of a state audit of Barnett's football camps, which is scheduled to be released Monday.

CU is cash-strapped and it is believed that if he re-signs, the bonus will be folded into the next deal. If CU fires Barnett, he would be owed $1.6 million of the bonus, plus a year of his annual base salary.

Barnett is 49-38 after seven seasons.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Colin Cowherd was so right on this. What did they want the guy to do? He brought in top athletes that made them competetive, but the guys had bad character. The school came down hard on him and told him to recruit character guys good at scholastics. He did. What did they think would happen, their talent pool would get deeper? The height of hypocrisy.

I don't know if it was so much that you can't get good character guys that can play - other schools do it. The incidents with the parties, the rape allegations and Barnett's mishandling of them put him on such a tight leash that he had no room for error on anything.

The problem is, they told him to not only clean up the program by getting rid of problem kids, but also raise the academic standards for entry. Well, he did that, but the school cannot expect him, in ONE season, to do so AND keep a cohesive unit together. Hey, they may have ended on a huge low, but they did attend the Big 12 title game. Which one do you want, Colorado? You can't have your cake and eat it too. Now who's going to want to step in to that job?

Just rain. I was hoping for some, but there is no hills to snowboard on so what is the point? :D I'm not really worried about the dangers of snow driving (From Idaho) but i'm worried about how everyone else will drive in it.

Seems to always come down to wins. Hell, he was the only one left standing from the old regime. President - gone. AD - gone.

The question is, who wants that job? They are hurting in recriuting and the new coach has to restore the image while winning. It's a good thing their side of the big 12 is so bad. Maybe that will give the new coach some room to lose a few.

How about Butch Davis? Same situation when he took over Miami. Renegade program reshaping. Good recruiter. Actively seeking a college job. Probably come cheaper on the front end of the deal.

Tell me about bad driving.....After growing up in Illinois, and living 13 years in Flagstaff, I know snow driving - we had a storm that dumped 8 inches on Nashville a few years ago - the city shut down for days. Cars off the road every 50 feet....many of them idiots in SUVs - they didn't realize that while 4WD may help you go, it does nothing to help you steer or stop :D

That might be a possibility. I wonder if they will hire from within:)

Classic. They shut everything down with only a little snow it seems out here. What good is an off road SUV if you don't know how to drive it in bad conditions, OR ever take it off road?

This guy has no shame. He showed up at his own firing announcement. geez Gary , take the $3mill and run. Consider yourself lucky.

P.S. Colorado surely needs to get the next coach choice right.

Bill McCartney left the job in a scandal.
Rick Neusheisel was the next one to leave in a scandal.
Gary Barnett leaves on a huge turmoil.

What a trifecta.

Espn has Hawkins as the #1 canidate. I don't think he's going to leave Boise. His son was gatorade player of the year and is coming to play QB for Boise in a year or so.

I don't think Neusheisel left in scandal. The allegations of illegal recruiting (I think that's what it was) came out only after he had taken the job at Washington. It was at Washington where he was caught up in the NCAA BBall pool scandal.

Yeah, he signed a 5 year deal. He's been in the running for Washington, Arizona, Oregon State and Notre Dame over the past few years. We just don't pay him as much as other can, but he's not a money guy as he's showed. We are close to completing our indoor practice facility, and a new press box will be completed by 2008. with a stadium expansion to follow that. He's really commited to building to program it seems.

Here's some of the things happening!

http://www.broncosports.com/athletic_excellence.asp

After We lost Nutt to Arkansas and Koetter to ASU, it's nice ot have someone sticking around for a while! Hawkins is something like 51-10 at Boise since he took over.

Ever since the ESPN Gameplan came to DirecTV , I have caught every Boise State game that I could. Gotta love that offense.

What happened to Jared Zabransky this year. He had a few blow up games. I thought after last year, he would get even better. Is it mental?

He's had such an interesting year. Our system is built for a pure pocket passer, but his ability to scramble is such a wild card. He started off the season with 6 Turnovers before the half at Georgia  , and hadn't been the same since. He doesn't throw a particularly accurate deep ball, but can throw on the run very well. We went to a more run based offense with a mulitple back attack this year to compensate. We've got some great QB's in the waiting and there could be a QB controversy next year.

Our offense is one of the most complicated in all of college football, with all the trick plays and offensive substitutions. Jared is in becuase he knows the offense, he just can't make some of the throws we need him to. He runs the option so well, but it's such a small part of our playbook. He has frozen some players with a fake pitch so bad they fell down.

He is still 20-4 as a starter at BSU, but some of the games have been pretty close.

I saw the Georgia/ BSU game. He looked shell shocked. If they had knocked off/ or played Georgia close, that would have been the game that would have put BSU over the top nationally.

Any big out of conference games next year?

Nope. We have Oregon State at home. If We get some decent QB play, we have a very easy schedule next year and since there will be changes in the BCS by adding another team, there's a small outside shot we might be able to get up there is we run the table. I think we still have one spot open, but nt sure who will fill it.
