The Indianapolis Colts pass on a tight end and instead take a do-it-all offensive lineman with the 14th pick in the latest NFL mock draft from Pro Football Network.
Brently Weissman put together his most recent mock and prioritized the trenches for the Colts by taking North Dakota State offensive lineman Grey Zabel in the first round.
And for those wondering, Tyler Warren went to Miami at pick No. 13, but Colston Loveland was still available at pick 14 for the Colts to take.
Zabel played over 2,000 snaps between both the right and left tackle spots during his career at NDSU. He also has 453 left guard snaps under his belt and 222 at right guard, according to PFF.
Then at the Senior Bowl, where he was one of the standout performers, Zabel took center snaps as well. At the NFL level, he is expected to be an interior lineman.
At left tackle during the 2024 season, Zabel allowed only seven pressures and one sack over 453 pass-blocking snaps. Along with ranking among the best in pass-blocking efficiency, he was also one of the best run-blockers by PFF's metrics.
An offensive line selection in the first round is absolutely in play for the Colts. Without Will Fries, there are unknowns when it comes to the starting five, not to mention that depth is needed as well.
Perhaps Matt Goncalves can slide over from tackle to guard. Although Goncalves has played tackle throughout his college and early NFL career, GM Chris Ballard did mention after drafting him that he believes he has the skill set to play guard as well.
However, that shouldn't be assumed either, and competition for that starting spot should be a part of the equation.
The quarterback competition doesn't mean nearly as much if the offensive line play isn't good enough. Success and overall consistency for the offense as a whole begins here.
