It took a late tying goal, a nerve-wracking video review and key performances beyond regulation time by Elvis Merzlikins and Adam Fantilli, but the Blue Jackets finally got what they desperately needed Monday night at UBS Arena.
Adam Fantilli’s goal and Elvis Merzlikins’ performance in a shootout gave the Jackets a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders that ended a six-game winless skid.
The game went to overtime after a controversial call with 8.9 seconds left in regulation that denied an apparent goal for Islanders forward Kyle Palmieri. After bumping into Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins, Palmieri deflected a shot from the point into the Columbus net, which referee Michael Markovic immediately waved off for goaltender interference.
A review followed by the NHL’s situation room in Toronto, which upheld Markovic’s call. Earlier in the game, the Blue Jackets lost a coach’s challenge for goaltender interference on a goal by Anders Lee that put the Islanders up, 3-2, late in the second period.
Merzlikins made 31 saves plus one more in the shootout, while Fantilli, Boone Jenner and Kirill Marchenko scored goals for the Blue Jackets in regulation — including the latter tying it 3-3 with 7:04 left in the third period. Palmieri, Lee and Pierre Engvall scored goals for the Islanders, who got 29 saves from Ilya Sorokin.
Columbus added two points with the win and New York added one with the shootout loss, keeping the Islanders one point ahead of the Blue Jackets for ninth place in the Eastern Conference. The Blue Jackets are just two points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the East’s second wild-card spot with 12 games left.
