Just when the Columbus Blue Jackets thought they had turned the corner in terms of injuries, the injury bug has bitten again.
Yesterday, before the game against the Buffalo Sabres, the team announced that they had recalled goalie Jet Greaves. The callup was due to Elvis Merzļikins leaving practice early. It was later said that he may have suffered an undisclosed injury.
The Cleveland Monsters recalled goalie Pavel Čajan from the Cincinnati Cyclones today. This could mean that Merzļikins will miss the last few games and that Greaves may be in Columbus for the remainder of the season as well.
In the game against the Sabres, the Jackets lost defenseman Jake Christiansen to injury. He played just four shifts before leaving the game, in which he wouldn't return.
Today, after practice, Head Coach Dean Evason told the media that both Merzļikins and Christiansen would miss tomorrow's game against the Washington Capitals. They also go to Washington on Sunday to play.
Also, in last night's game, Zach Werenski took a nasty slash from Sam Lafferty that left Werenski's hand bloody. He sat out today's practice, as did a few other veterans, as it was optional. His condition is unknown at this time. But he did finish the game last night with a bandage on his thumb and participated in the post-game event, where he handed the jersey off of his back to CBJ fan Jen Clark.
With only four games left and their playoff hopes hanging on by the thinnest of threads, the Jackets need all the health they can get.
With only four games left, the CBJ haven't been eliminated, and that's fun to hear for most people.
