The Crew are down to 14 first-team players for their early-season matchup against New York City FC tonight.
Three Crew regulars are dealing with injuries, four are missing from MLS action after being called up to their respective international team, and one is missing due to a red-card suspension.
More: Columbus Crew's Patrick Schulte, Max Arfsten called up to USMNT, who else is out vs NYCFC?
Going into the season, coach Wilfried Nancy knew the Crew could be without multiple players for this game due to the FIFA international window, but he preferred to have Columbus play during this window rather than have a game later in the season.
"Yes, we have the FIFA break, last year was the same (situation)," Nancy said. "We believe this is better to do it now, and at the end of the year, we're going to get maybe 35 or 40 games, and the September window is good to have rest."
While MLS makes the final decision on which FIFA breaks a team has to play during, teams can communicate to the league when they would prefer to have games scheduled.
Defender Malte Amundsen is also unavailable tonight after receiving a red card against San Diego FC on March 15, earning him a one-game suspension.
