Sheldon Day made quite an impression on the Washington Commanders when he was added to the practice squad last summer. Once Washington lost Jonathan Allen to a torn pec in Week 6, the Commanders promoted Day to the 53-man roster, where he remained for the duration of the season, even when Allen returned.
On Thursday, the Commanders agreed to a one-year deal for Day to return in 2025. Day, 30, enters his 10th NFL season in 2025. He recorded 24 tackles, including two for loss. While undersized (6-foot-1, 285) for the interior, Washington coaches loved Day's effort and leadership. He'll continue to remain a part of Washington's expanding defensive line room.
Day wasn't the only lineman to return in 2025. Washington also agreed to a one-year deal with offensive tackle Trent Scott. The 31-year-old Scott will play his ninth NFL season with the Commanders in 2025. After signing a two-year deal ahead of the 2023 season, Scott has been a reliable backup for the Commanders. In 2024, he appeared in all 17 regular-season games, making one start. Washington trusted Scott so much in the playoffs that they had him play right guard when Sam Cosmi injured his knee in the NFC divisional round win over the Detroit Lions.
Scott is best remembered for his touchdown in the Week 3 upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. That play will be the answer to trivia questions for years: Who caught Jayden Daniels's first career touchdown pass? It was Scott.
Finally, the Commanders bring back more offensive line depth on Thursday, agreeing to another one-year deal with guard/center Michael Deiter. Deiter, a 2019 third-round pick, signed with the Commanders last March and played in all 17 games last season. He made two starts at center when Tyler Biadasz was hurt/sick and has 90 games (35 starts) of NFL experience.
Something interesting about Deiter is that the Commanders turned to Scott instead of Deiter when Cosmi went down. Deiter is a natural guard/center, whereas Scott is a tackle.
The three re-signings continue to add depth to Washington's 2025 roster.
