The Washington Commanders have made all their free agents, including those who returned to the team, available to the media via Zoom once they've signed their contracts. On Thursday, defensive end Clelin Ferrell met with the press and learned his alma mater's fate in the NCAA Tournament's opening round.
Ferrell was speaking to the media when asked if he knew what was happening with the Clemson Tigers. Clemson, the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Region, faced 12th-seeded McNeese. The underdog Cowboys dominated the Tigers for much of the game, even holding them to just 13 first-half points. However, Clemson made a furious comeback in the second half, but it proved too little, too late, as McNeese pulled off the upset of the day with a 69-67 win.
Ferrell, a former All-American at Clemson, had a hilarious line when learning of his alma mater's fate on Thursday.
"Ohhhh, who is that?" Ferrell asked while apparently watching the game on a monitor. "What team is that? Well, we're a football school—three-time national champion Clemson Tigers. NCAA football, we're a football school, and shoutout to my guys on the Clemson basketball team. It be some tough years out there, but don't worry, the rain has got to stop at some point."
Ferrell is right. Despite a string of NCAA Tournament appearances over the years, Clemson has never made a Final Four, although it did come close one year ago, falling in the Elite Eight.
Ferrell, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, was a three-year starter for Clemson, a two-time All-American, and a two-time national champion. He is entering his second year in Washington in 2025.
