The Commercial Appeal took home four top-3 honors — including a first-place award — in the Super Bowl of sports journalism contests.

APSE announced top-10 lists for each category in March before announcing the order of finish this week.

Photographer Chris Day won for best feature photo in The Commercial Appeal's circulation category in the 2024 Associated Press Sports Editors contest. The winning photo was taken on March 13, 2024, at the Class 1A TSSAA boys basketball state tournament quarterfinal game in Murfreesboro. It featured dejected Middle College player Patrick Mask and a pair of jubilant Gordonsville players.

Memphis basketball beat writer Jason Munz was awarded a trio of third-place honors — one for beat writing (his third straight top-five finish), one for long feature and one for breaking news, with co-author Jonah Dylan, the CA's Memphis football beat writer.

Munz's beat writing packet (one of 46 entries) included work on the University of Memphis' landmark NIL deal with FedEx; the Tigers' ongoing NCAA investigation (stemming from former player Malcolm Dandridge's eligibility); and the men's basketball team's collapse during the 2023-24 season.

Munz's long feature on the meaning of Father's Day for former Memphis strength coach Darby Rich received one first-place vote and placed third out of a 62-entry field.

Munz and Dylan earned a third-place finish (out of 57 entries) for breaking the news of FedEx's landmark NIL deal with the University of Memphis in April 2024.

The Commercial Appeal competes in Category C in the APSE contest, the third-largest category based on print circulation or digital readership size.

Day, Munz and Dylan's awards will be presented during the APSE summer convention in Minneapolis.
