Conard won its second straight Division III ice hockey championship, 4-1, over Joel Barlow/Weston/Abbott Tech Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac’s M&T Bank Arena.

Junior Jack Eisenberg scored the first goal for third-seeded Conard and freshman Nate Dubois had the second goal in the first period. Both goals were assisted by Torin McGoldrick. Fourth-seeded JBWA scored its only goal (by Kris Neiger) to make it 2-1 but sophomore Henry Tamaccio scored with eight seconds left in the first period to give the Red Wolves a 3-1 lead heading into the intermission.

Senior Porter Andrews scored the final goal for Conard (17-7-2) 45 seconds into the third period.

“It feels incredible,” Conard coach Jason Olson said. “They both feel so different – different teams, different mentality, different approach.”

Conard won its first title since 1996 last year in Division III but lost 10 seniors and one player to prep school, and Olson wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this year’s team.

“Last year we were very skilled, very talented,” Olson said. “It was kind of a mindset, we had the team to do it, we had to win, we had to pull it off.

“This year was more like ‘We’ve been here before, we’ve got the guys to do it. If we play as a team, we can get this done.’ We relied more on team strength and depth than we did individual talent.”

The Red Wolves had tied JBWA 2-2 on Jan. 6.

“I really didn’t know what to expect going into the year,” Olson said. “We lost so much and so much leadership. We knew we could be a competitive team in DIII, but we didn’t know how good. We played close games all year. We didn’t blow people out. We were never the frontrunners so to put it all together so well the last few games was really cool.”
