Concerned with Diamondbacks making desperation moves?

Several threads have been posted with people posing their legitimate concerns over the current state of the Diamondbacks, and posted their thoughts on some of what they feel the team's biggest needs are as we head into the month of July and face the trade deadline.

In your opinion, what do you feel would be crawling in to desperation mode? This team has a pretty decent farm system, and quite a few prospects who I don't think are far off from being called up to Phoenix. However, do the DBacks go for broke, and go after someone like a Giancarlo Stanton (who I certainly wouldn't object to trading for) or a Cliff Lee (who my thoughts of acquiriing are the opposite)?

This is always tricky. Would you trade the Dbacks top 3 prospects for a trip to the World Series? A lot of people were mad at the Dbacks for winning the championship in 2001 because of the financial hardship it cost the team over the next few years. A lot of people say they'd give up anything to win it all. Ask a Cubs fan what they'd be willing to give up to see the Cubs win the World Series.

I guess you have to mentally develop some kind of risk/reward formula.

What I hope we stay away from is reaching for a "#1" pitcher that is a glorified #2 and giving up our top pitching prospects Skaggs and Bradley to do so. I hope we've learned our lesson with the trading of Parker and Scherzer. Had we not made that mistake in the past we wouldn't be looking for starting pitching today. That being said I would t be against a trade for Smardja (sp?) etc as long as it doesn't cost us Skaggs or Bradley.

Also, I love the idea of going all in for a legit YOUNG premier bat like Stanton. I would be open to trading Skaggs plus much more if we could pull that off.

Its gonna cost huge money to resign Stanton.

To me, it's all depending on what the risk is and what the reward is long term is. I also see both sides of the coin.

Looking back in history, 100 percent of Diamondback fans would do the Curt Schilling deal again. Not only did it help Arizona win a World Series, but it also seemingly worked out for them long term. While Schilling had an abbreviated stay in Phoenix, none of the prospects panned out as Philadelphia and experts thought they would when the deal was made. Thus, Arizona gained big without crushing themselves long term.

On the flipside of this however, for every Schilling for Travis Lee, Vincente Padilla, Nelson Figueroa and Omar Daal deal; there's a dozen Mark Langston for Randy Johnson, Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz or Larry Andersen for Jeff Bagwell type deals where the team making a push for the gusto takes it on the chin, hard.

To me, if you're risking crippling the farm; the trade better be both a sure bet to work for the now and one that will work long term. In this sense, I wouldn't sweat several top prospects for a name like Giancarlo Stanton. He's already established as a high level power hitter at 23 years old. He's only going to get better and likely will be younger than quite a few of the prospects they'd have to trade to get him. For someone like Cliff Lee, he might be a sure bet for here and now, but in 2 years from now will he be? Also, is Cliff Lee the line seperating Arizona from winning a World Series or not?

It truly is a catch 22.

I'm with you. The more I hear the name "Ricky Nolasco," the less I like it.

Samardzjia (sic), I'd be ok with... But not at the expense of Bradley, Skaggs or Braden Shipley (as a PTBNL).

Forget P on the market, look at what our rotation could have looked like and what is could look like:

Could have been:
Scherzer
Parker
Skaggs
Corbin
Delgado

Could be:
Corbin
Skaggs
Delgado
Bradley
Holmberg

Pen: Meo, Chafin, Hernandez, Brewer

I would really rather see these guys for the next few years. If you have to have a Garza or Nolasco, wait until FA this winter and keep your studs.
