The future of Vancouver Canucks prospect Tom Willander is still murky, despite Patrik Allvin addressing it during the management team’s press conference earlier today. Willander, the 11th overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft, wrapped up his season with Boston University a couple of weeks ago and is now eligible to be signed by the Canucks. However, whether he wants to or not has become unknown.

“I was aware that the Swedish national team had interest in Tom leading up to the World Championship for some pre game tournaments there. His advisor has informed us that he was going back to school,” Allvin said. “It’s a lot of money for a young player to pass on. But that’s the information we had here as of last week from his agent, that the intention was to go back to school. We’ll continue to work with Tom and he’s coming in here for development camp. Great relationship with him. I think this is part of learning how to be a pro and what the next step will come.”
Despite this comment, Cam Robinson of EliteProspects clarified the opposite on X. “I’ve been told in no uncertain terms that Tom Willander’s desire is to turn pro rather than return to BU for a 3rd season. But there is also an expectation of what he’s worth compared to similar players drafted in similar spots.”
"Our intent was/is to turn pro, but if we don't agree on a contract that Tom and his family are comfortable with, returning to BU and other situations become possible over the next few seasons," Willander's agent, Todd Diamond, added via an X post from Rick Dhaliwal.
Willander is regarded as the team’s best prospect currently not with the Abbotsford Canucks. It was recently reported that the defender will be joining Team Sweden at the 2025 IIHF World Championships. Whether or not he leaves the tournament with a deal from the club that drafted him is something yet to be determined.
