I heard some guys at work speculating on this, so I thought I'd put it here for public discussion:

The ratings for the October 10th matchup between the Pats and Dolphins could be through the roof--If, and only if, the Patriots remain undefeated. It would be a dream matchup of a team trying to break the consecutive wins record vs. the team that currently holds the record. Quite a story for an early October game. CBS probably already has the 15-second promos in the can to hype the game.

The NFL has a vested interested in generating ratings. Referees are employees of the NFL. A quiet word to the officiating crew from the league office would be all it would take.

1. The NFL would never risk their reputation by trying to encourage a favorable matchup in what would clearly be unethical behaviour.

2. The NFL already dominates the TV Nielson ratings. From just the past week, the NFL has 3 of the top 10 programs as far as prime time broadcasts, 2 of the top 5 (including #1) amoung cable only broadcasts, and 3 of the top 10 (also including #1) among African American viewers.

If this were the NBA, I might buy into your "theory" somewhat, but not the NFL.

Go Cards!!!

Also, what would be the great hype? If the Pats continue to win they will own the streak of consecutive wins way before the face the Dolphins.
