Constantine

Release Date: February 18, 2005
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
Director: Francis Lawrence
Screenwriter: Kevin Brodbin, Frank Cappello
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Suspense
Website: Constantine

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Gavin Rossdale, Djimon Hounsou, Shia LaBeouf, Peter Stormare

Plot Summary: John Constantine has been to hell and back.

Born with a gift he didn't want, the ability to recognize the half-breed angels and demons that walk the earth in human camouflage, Constantine (Keanu Reeves) was driven to take his own life to escape the tormenting clarity of his vision. But he failed. Resuscitated against his will, he found himself cast back into the land of the living. Now, marked as an attempted suicide with a temporary lease on life, he patrols the earthly border between heaven and hell, hoping in vain to earn his way to salvation by waging war on the earthbound minions of evil.

But Constantine is no saint. Increasingly disillusioned by the world around him and at odds with the one beyond, he's a hard-drinking, hard-living bitter hero who scorns the very idea of heroism. Constantine will fight to save your soul but he doesn't want your admiration or your thanks – and certainly not your sympathy. All he wants is a way out.

When a desperate but skeptical police detective (Rachel Weisz as Angela Dodson) enlists his help in solving the mysterious death of her beloved twin sister, their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a catastrophic series of otherworldy events, the two become inextricably involved and seek to find their own peace at whatever cost.

"Constantine" is based on characters from the DC Comics/Vertigo Hellblazer Graphic Novels.

Got some decent reviews already, but I've seen a lot of footage from this movie at work, and it looks pretty awesome. Much better than the Matrix sequels at least...

Anyone know if this is true... A friend with some movie knowledge told me Keanu Reeves Matrix contract was back loaded and he gave almost 100 million to be divided amongst the crew.

Keanu Reeves: wikipedia page

Independent of speculation Keanu is reported to be very generous with his time and money, lending both to a variety of causes. He took a significant amount of the profits from his Matrix series and treated the hard-working special-effects crew to motorcycles, among other things. True to his Buddhist teachings, he does not have (by 'Hollywood' standards) many possessions and keeps his life uncluttered. He began playing bass with the rock band Dogstar, who have now gone "into hibernation". He currently plays bass in a band called becky (http://beckymusic.com) with former Dogstar drummer Rob Mailhouse, guitarist Paulie Kosta and singer Rebecca Lord.

I cant wait to see it. I think kurt Warner and Keanu Reeves have sold their souls to satan. I mean a grocery clerk wins the superbag and the worlds most untalented actor makes a bundle for every line he is fed lol

I am amped!!!

I do not disagree about Keanu's acting talents but he is a pretty cool cat!

He gets some good rolls and as long as the producers, directors, know his limits I think Keanu can get the job done. I recently watch "Jonny Psnemonic" and I had forgotten how decent a movie it was for such a low budget.

That's funny, Keanu isn't good at all, but he's far from the most untalented actor in the world.

I wouldn't be surprised if Shia LaBeouf steals every scene he's in. For those of you who don't recognize the name - he was the brother on Even Stevens (Disney Channel), then he went on to roles in Holes and The Battle of Shaker Heights, etc.

Saw a show on MTV last night which had Keanu, Shia, and the director taking questions from the audience and showed up to 10 minutes of actual film footage (looks good). Shia stole the show, sarcastically and humorously answering questions. Keanu was much more laidback and quiet (full beard too, must be for his next role).

Examples: A person asked "In the movie, do you and Keanu have the same abilities?" Shia responded - "Yeah, we're pretty much the same character. C'mon?! How boring would that be?" :D

Also - a man actually asked this - "The scenes of you going to hell...how much of that was real and how much was CGI?" Shia jumps in "It was all real. We went to hell. This film had a tremendous budget." :D

Seemed like Keanu and Shia got along well too. Keanu just sat back and let Shia do his thing, smiling and laughing at Shia's comments.

From what I understand from reports and firsthand knowledge from friends, he's actually pretty laid back, doesn't really spend a lot of his money on himself, and knows he's never going to win an oscar. A lot of people really don't like him, but I'm not sure he's unlikable--he seems pretty un-Hollywood.

Seems to be that he's very personable and a likeable guy, but doesn't have much real talent (but he still sells!). Heck, good to know a good guy can still make it.

Shoot, I know I can't act, but if someone said, "Hey, here's 20 million bucks, will you star in a movie?" What do you think I'd say? :p

No, it'd be "Imagine the HOME THEATER I could build to watch all the DVDs I already have... oh, and throw in these 200 DVDs too." :D

I saw it yesterday. It was pretty good, not spectacular, but certainly better than the last two Matrix movies. Keanu can't act, we all know that, but he does have a "coolness" that's apparent throughout the movie. And of course, Rachel Weisz is pretty tasty. The supporting cast was actually quite good as well.

I don't know, I like movies with religious imagery, don't know why, but I liked this one--the scenes in hell were pretty high budget, but surprisingly well done.

I have a hard time believing it was better than the last two Matrix movies...both Ebert and Roper thought it was pretty bad...

I saw it this weekend with my brother. I thought it was better than I was expecting. Like 'The Order' I think they could have done a little more exposition into the nature of the beasts and the exorcisms, but I liked the concept of the story.

Keanu knows he's not a great actor, but he uses what he has well so his performances are usually good enough. I thought the rest of the casting was pretty good, with the possible exception of the devil.

As to the Matrix sequels, I think I've gained a certain amount of appreciation of them over time (the second more than the first) but I've come to the conclusion they should have never done the sequels.

So, the big question is, are they planning a sequel?

I understand that...but Roger Ebert is usually pretty reliable...i mean, when he first reviewed Million Dollar Baby, he said it should be up for best pic, actor, actress, etc...and look how it did.

I know you can't always listen to them...but Ebert and Roper seem a cut above the rest and really know their stuff.
