The New York Jets managed to keep linebacker Jamien Sherwood around prior to the start of the NFL's 2025 free agency frenzy.

Sherwood, 25, signed a three-year extension to stay in New York. The deal was reportedly worth $45 million with $30M guaranteed.

After replacing CJ Mosley for nearly all of last season, Sherwood was a tackling machine and had a breakout campaign in 2024. The fourth-year pro saw his first run as a starter on defense.

In breaking down Sherwood's contract, Spotrac has revealed that it's more of a two-year extension.

Over the course of Sherwood's deal, various bonuses and other items will be factored in. What matters most to fans usually are the salary cap implications and that's where the "out" reported by Spotrac comes into play.

The first two years see Sherwood cost $5M and $11.5M against New York's salary cap, respectively.

In that same time period, the dead-cap hits on it contract are $30M and $24.375M, respectively. Essentially over those years it would cost the Jets more against their cap to cut Sherwood than to keep him.

Then that changes.

In 2027, Sherwood's cap hit sits at $19M. Meanwhile, the dead-cap hit drops to $6.25M. At that time, cutting Sherwood would save the Jets $12.75M in cap space which is exactly what the team would do... unless they want to keep Sherwood and then another contract extension would be on the table.

Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 offseason.
