So they are not protected?

Someone told me they were.

Can I use a regular blank DVD?

They are protected, but there are ways around it. As far as using a regular blank DVD, you can, but you have to use the right type for your burner. There are DVD+RWs and DVD-RWs and now some burners do both. So you need to make sure you buy the right media for your burner.
