The development of WR Bryan Gilmore could be the key to the offense. If he's 100 percent by training camp, Gilmore could be the club's top deep threat.

TE Freddie Jones was supposed to be a key ingredient for the offense last year, but he never fit into the scheme. He was inconsistent and wondered about his role, but it might not change much in 2003. He's a talented receiver, but he won't be the primary target.

Safeties analysis

The starting duo has the potential to be strong. The key will be getting SS Adrian Wilson, a disappointment in 2002 as a first-year starter, to play up to his capabilities. Wilson has great range, is physical and has the coverage skills of a corner. He has worked hard in the offseason and increased his weight to 223 pounds. FS Dexter Jackson was a key free-agent pickup. He's a playmaker who provides needed leadership. He made an immediate impression at minicamp with his enthusiasm and upbeat personality. Justin Lucas is a valuable, versatile reserve. He can play either safety spot and moves to linebacker in nickel situations. Mike Stone has been a disappointment. He moved from cornerback to safety a year ago and needs to improve to make the team.

Ever since last preseason, I have always been excited about Gilmore's potential. He was toasting DB's deep on a number of occasions. He had a huge catch against the NYG and he is great at special teams as a gunner.

Hopefully he will be ready to go during training camp.

If he makes any kind of an impact it will just be gravy IMO, I dont expect anything from him. I do think he was a good gunner, but as far as a WR I never saw anything from him. So anything he can give us will be great....

Did you catch any of the preseason games last year? Against San Diego, he took a pass over the middle and raced approximately 40 yds for the TD. Against Green Bay, he burned the DB for a 30-35 yd TD. That one was called back because of a hold, but the fact that he got open deep is encouraging. He also played well in the scrimmage at NAU scoring a TD against the 1st defense.

I know that it is hard to follow the preseason games...especially from out of state, so I am just filling in those who didn't know. I think he showed enough for us to be excited for his future.

Now that you mention it I think I did see the GB one... I hope your right, I must of missed his plays... I know he is fast, and I love his work ethic. I would be impressed if he gets higher that 4th on our depth chart...

Yes, he finally showed a few flashes last year. But, if you consider the facts he took a couple of years to do even that and that he broke his leg badly, then you can't really be counting on him for this year. And, I don't think we are after we drafted two WRs in the first three picks. If he sets the world on fire this year, great. If he doesn't, well, he never really did much anyways.

Last year was his third year. Last year was Peerless Price's third year, too. Not all WRs come one like gangbusters in their rookie seasons. I don't know what you want. He was an undrafted rookie, too. Anything you can get out of him is gravy, since you didn't spend anything (comparitively) to get him.

Exactly. There's no reason to get all jacked up over Gilmore right now. I expect very little from him, so if he contributes in a meaningful way this year.....that's cool.

I predict that he will end up starting this year if his leg is healthy. Jerry Sullivan loves him and until Sullivan gives us a reason to not believe him, I will always take his opinion seriously. I think that part of the reason that we drafted two other WR's early is that there is no guaruntee that he will be healthy. It is not the whole reason, but a part of it.

I think Gilmore is slightly ahead of McAddley to be our big play guy.

But both will have to show more consistency if we are to succeed this season.

Call my comments "treason", but I think the starting spots are Gilmore's and McAddley's to lose and Johnson's and Boldin's challenge to take away from them. (My guess going into camp is that both Gilmore and McAddley have more speed and explosion than Johnson or Boldin, though both rooks have other important redeeming aspects of their game).

But Price was a relatively high pick who everyone expected to be a pretty good player. Bryan was not a high pick and couldn't even make our roster initially.

He's very fast and he wouldn't be the first guy to come from nowhere(Joe Horn recently) to be good but it's very rare. Living in the Bay Area it seems every year I'm reading about some sprinter on the Raiders roster trying to make it big and none of them ever seem to make it. Until Gilmore is doing it in real games I'm a skeptic, he's got the speed but there's a lot more to playing WR than running fast.

I do hope he's healthy though he was certainly missed on special teams last year after he got hurt.

I love the kid, but if I remember right he still had pins or srews in his leg as of February or March.

Will he be ready? Will he have lost a step? Those are the questions. I'm not sure if he could fill Bostons role of 2 years ago, but I know he would stretch the defense and make some big plays.
