I know this will sound like the most bizzare idea ever presented on this board (except maybe a few of Slins trade proposals
), but there is perverse logic in offering Eisley to the Mavs for Nash in a sign and trade.
As it stands, the Mavs have just used up their cap space re-signing Daniels who plays a kind of point forward. They actually could use a point guard that doesn't make a lot of turnovers and Eisley was once an OK point guard.
What is more important is that by doing a sign and trade, it would give the Mavs a $3.6 million trade exemption: $10 million less $6.375 million. That's not much, but the Mavs might get some other help with it. What makes this interesting is that the Suns could structure the Nash contract to put more money up front (say starting at $12 million) which would raise the value of the exemption to close to the MLE). Even with the higher salary for Nash, it would still free up an extra $4 million for the Suns to go after a free agent big.
The beauty of the option is that it creates a way to unload Eisley for cap space without having to use the Chicago pick. It does throw the Mavericks back into the FA market, but the value of the extra cap space would be far more valuable than hurting the Mavs at this point.
