Could you help me with a draft question?

I know it’s early, but I’m trying to put together a list of each team’s needs in the 2004 draft. I figured the people on this board would know more than the typical sportswriter, so this is where I came to ask.

I’m trying to determine a need at every position: QB, RB, FB, WR, TE, T, G, C, DE, DT/NT (Nose Tackle), OLB, ILB (MLB), CB, S, K, P. I need to know specific positions. Not just O-line or linebackers for example, but what type of offensive linemen or linebackers.

Here are the categories I’m trying to determine for each team:

Desperate needs (a position you have a big hole at):

Draft priorities (positions you need to concentrate on):

Not a priority, but will draft if right player is available:

Might draft for depth:

Will not draft these positions:

Not all of these need to be filled out (not every team has a desperate need as a position). I’d appreciate any comments or suggestions for players you think your team might be interested in also.

I already have a 7 round mock draft, and a prospect ranking board set up here: http://e.1asphost.com/nonamedraft/index.html .

Thanks

Sounds like a lott of work. Good luck and welcome to the board. I will take a Stack of Pancakes and a glass of milk and a paper bag for Sundays game.

The Cardinals have needs at every position except maybe LB and RB.

Their top priority should be to land a Pass Rushing DT or DE, Shut Down Corner or Franchise QB. I think they need to go after a QB so they can groom him to be ready to start when the New stadium opens in a couple years.

The next priorities should be WR and add depth at CB.

The thing that gets me is that we drafted the last two years for our pass rushing DT and DE (Bryant/Pace). How come we have to keep coming back to square one?

Exactly why I think we ought to stay away from these positions on day one of the draft this year. We need to get a proven guy at DE opposite Pace through FA. I think we're okay at DT for now (Bell, Russell and Tanner are solid players that are hurt by the absence of pass rush coming off the edge).

I say our first three rounds should look like this (baring some miracle , i.e. an amazing player drops to us that we can't pass up):

1. QB
2. CB
3. CB

I'd probably add a dominant WR to the Desperate Needs list.

But some words of caution -

1. There are times when an available player in the draft is so good that you cannot (should not) pass him up in order to fill a need.

2. (The Tommy Knight Rule) - There are other times when all the available picks at need positions suck. (Thou shall not reach!)

3. Some of our needs figure to be filled in free agency (we figure to have the cap room and the desire to be aggressive. FA moves made before the draft could alter the needs lists (at various priorities) considerably.

4. A bowl of Hotter 'n Hell Chili, an icy Pearl Beer and a hunka cornbread, please.

Actually, in this order, I think we need:

Franchise QB (NOT a 'could be' type like we already have)

Stud DE (of the pass-rush variety) OR Stud DT (of the pass rush variety)---only take one of these here

Shutdown Corner

Stud DE OR Stud DT (the one that wasn't ranked second)

Blazing-speed WR

I think (hope) we can get the shutdown corner in FA, and I pray we draft the franchise-type (no guarantees) QB in the 1st round. The stud DE will be hard to come by, so you sacrifice and go for a pure pass-rushing specialist. The stud DT may be hard to come by as well-hopefully can get one in FA, though I don't know who'll be available. The blazing-speed WR shouldn't be too hard to find, because all we need is a guy that can run fast and has decent hands-not a possession guy, not an over-the-middle guy...just a speed specialist. Hopefully then he can return punts too.

Despite it's performance on the field this team is filled with a lot of talent. Only two needs are obvious with a third need if the right talent is there. As you might have guessed from previous posts the two biggest needs are a franchise QB and a CB. If Manning or Roethlisberger aren't available in the first I wouldn't be surprised if a stud DT (Wilfolk) capable of stuffing the run and taking up space would be an option.

Besides these three positions a 3rd WR and some quality depth at OT are the only obvious needs IMO.

My response exactly.

Since newbies buy lunch I'll have a couple of brats and some Kool Aid to wash it down.

WTF was that? Sorry, I actually spilled something on my keyboard and when I shook it it spit the above out.

What I was going to follow with is that based on the personnel that have moved on maybe it's not the player evaluation that is the problem with the draft but the coaching staff. We're not developing the players we draft or not playing to their strengths.

Find a good coach, give him input as to who he needs and let him coach.

Desperate needs (a position you have a big hole at):

These are NEEDS, not DESIRES:

#1 Shutdown, speed-type cornerback.

#2 Passrush. Whether it be a collapse the pocket DT or a speed demon DE, this team desperately needs a focal point on the defensive line. Even a one-dimensional passrusher (ala freeney) would be advisable.

#3 Franchise QB. Not a reach or project like mcnown (and yes, i'm talking about cade not josh). Not a second/third rounder like mccown (josh). But an honest to goodness top 5 pick qb full of potential.

Draft priorities (positions you need to concentrate on):

QB of the future
CB
DE
DT
Speed WR

Not a priority, but will draft if right player is available:

Strong safety as wilson is still a question mark
OT as clement could stand to be upgraded and big is a question mark as a tackle

Might draft for depth:

CB
CB
CB
OL

Will not draft these positions:

RB
I will not say LB 'cuz i still don't think we have an impact LB. they are servicable, but if an impact LB were available we might go that route.

I have an early version up now at The Huddle Report (http://www.thehuddlereport.com) . The link is half way down the page under 7 round mock draft.

If anyone sees anything out of place, or has any comments I would like to hear them.

Thanks again for you help with getting the team needs together.

Interesting. I wouldn't throw up if that's the way it went down. I like Roethlisberger better than Manning right now.

Manning may be gone anyway when we draft.

Someone needs the balls to draft Roethlisberger....it will take gonads because no one's heard of him and they'll be screamin for someone else and another position.
