Counsell's thumb will need surgery

By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com

PHOENIX -- An MRI taken Wednesday morning of Craig Counsell's dislocated right thumb showed that the infielder sustained ligament damage and will have to undergo surgery, a spokesman for the team said.

No further details were available, but Diamondbacks public relations director Mike Swanson said Counsell was consulting with hand specialist Dr. Don Sheridan and that the team will make both available to the media following Wednesday's game with the Phillies.

Counsell injured the thumb in the sixth inning of Tuesday night's game when he attempted to break up a double play at second base. As he slid past the bag, his right thumb collided with the bag.

The 32-year-old, who is batting .274, was placed on the 15-day disabled list immediately following the game and the club called up shortstop Alex Cintron from Triple-A Tucson to take his place.

Counsell missed the last two months of the 2002 season when he sustained a pinched nerve in his neck that required surgery.
