Some positions are too important to ignore. If left unaddressed over free agency, they become glaring needs over draft weekend. It’s there where they threaten to disrupt the draft board, banishing BPA (best player available) to the back of the room and moving “need” up to center stage. Cornerback appears to be that position for the Dallas Cowboys defense.
All-Pro DaRon Bland is firmly in place at one starting spot but after him is anyone’s guess. Jourdan Lewis left in free agency leaving the nickel spot wide open. And Trevon Diggs is recovering from offseason surgery which could very likely bleed into the new season. With so few options deeper down the depth chart the front office understandably traded Buffalo for Kaiir Elam. Elam has not lived up to his first-round expectations and looks for a fresh start with the Cowboys in 2025.
The way things stand today the Cowboys have one starting-caliber CB projected for Week 1. It’s a situation that has yet to be convincingly addressed and something that threatens to be a major disrupter in the 2025 NFL draft.
The Cowboys’ active approach in free agency was designed to remove as many pressing needs as possible prior to the draft. In theory, by softly touching all the problem areas the front office has positioned the Cowboys to be opportunists in the draft, pouncing on value and targeting BPA as much as possible. That may have worked in some areas of the team but positions like CB still look frighteningly thin and delusionally hopeful.
It’s fair to say the Cowboys need to use one of their top-75 picks on the CB position this April or they will be in a very tough spot when the season opens. With significant needs at receiver and defensive tackle also staring them in the face, it puts the Cowboys in a rather precarious position heading into the draft.
Most of the good starting options at receiver and defensive tackle have already dried up in free agency but CB still offers a few solutions. Stephon Gilmore, Shaq Griffin and Asante Samuel Jr. are a few of names available in free agency at the moment. Any one of them could be used as bridge and push the Cowboys back into a BPA mindset heading into the draft.
The upcoming draft has a handful of attractive second and third-tier CBs who would be great fits for the Cowboys in both the short and long term. Dallas should absolutely be keeping that option open. But right now, the need appears so severe, the Cowboys can’t afford to simply be draft-day opportunists, they have to be problem solvers. That means signing a capable veteran CB in free agency or forcing a fit in the draft out of need.

Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs had chondral tissue graft surgery Thursday on his left knee and the recovery could keep him until parts of training camp if not longer, according to multiple sources.
