The Cowboys made a potentially big move on Thursday, adding important depth at a key position with a headline-making trade for second-year quarterback Joe Milton. In this news wrapup, we'll go over the details of the deal (including the revised schedule of draft picks), we'll get you better acquainted with the cannon-armed passer, we'll tell you who else was in the conversation to join the Dallas QB room, and we'll tell you how the Cowboys were graded for the transaction.
Elsewhere, the Cowboys have put themselves in a position to be completely flexible with their first-round draft pick... but will they actually do it? DeMarvion Overshown shares a goal for his 2025 season that borders on the incredible, we look at how Brian Schottenheimer has been preparing for his new job for literally his entire life, we take a closer look at the new changes coming to the NFL rulebook (and one that won't quite yet), we preview what promises to be a very busy "Dallas Day" at The Star in Frisco, and we entertain a positively preposterous trade scenario involving the face of the Cowboys franchise... but only long enough to dismiss it entirely for its sheer absurdity.

News broke Thursday morning that the Cowboys had worked a deal with New England for their third-string quarterback, taken in the sixth round just a year ago. Milton went 22-of-29 passing for 241 yards and a score in the team's season finale win over Buffalo. He added 16 yards and a touchdown on the ground in his only action as a rookie. Dallas also gets an extra seventh-round selection; the Patriots take one of the Cowboys' fifth-round picks.

Dallas still has ten picks in this year's draft, even after the Milton deal. They sent the 171st pick to the Patriots, and got Pick No. 217 in return. The Cowboys' haul currently stands at: one pick each in the first, second, and third rounds; a pair of fifths, a pair of sixths, and three seventh-round selections.

If Milton develops into a starter or turns the flashes he's already shown into something more consistent before the expiration of his rookie contract, the Cowboys will love having made this trade. They earn a B for the move on upside alone. Shipping off the big-armed passer, though, just to move up 46 spots on Day Three is certainly a gamble; the Pats were given a C for their end of the trade.

Milton will certainly stand out on gameday. He's the exact same size as Cam Newton and has an arm like a cannon. He needs to work on consistency and accuracy, but the raw potential is jaw-dropping. His lone game appearance for the Patriots turned into a Week 18 win... and cost New England any chance at the No. 1 overall draft pick (and may have cost head coach Jerod Mayo his job). He's cousins with former NFL wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

Despite having over $167 million of unamortized cap hits over the next three seasons still wrapped up in Deshaun Watson, the Browns are supposedly working on some kind of blockbuster deal that would bring them Dak Prescott. In return, Dallas would apparently get cornerback Greg Newsome and a second-round draft pick. That's according to a Cleveland radio host and is an idea that obviously makes absolutely zero sense in the real world, at least the part that's outside the 216 area code.

Running back or wide receiver? How about cornerback? Offensive or defensive lineman? Head coach Brian Schottenheimer is hoping to not be locked in to addressing any one position with the 12th overall pick. "We’re going to look at best player available, and if the best player is a running back, and we feel like that’s a great fit, we should do it.” That strategy sure worked the last time the club picked 12th; Dallas had no plans to select a linebacker/pass rusher when Micah Parsons was suddenly available at 12 back in 2021.

Thanks to the huge geographical footprint of the DFW Metroplex, the Cowboys have access to a wealth of "local" football talent. Draft prospects who either grew up in or played college ball in the area are eligible for a "Dallas Day" invite, where Cowboys coaches and scouts can get an exclusive up close and personal look. Dozens of hopefuls will descend on The Star on Friday for this year's event, with those who impress likely to move up the team's big board.

Overshown doesn't just want to return to the field this season; he's going after the Comeback Player of the Year Award. "You're not gonna see no drop-off. You're going to see me," he told Good Morning Football in reference to his breakout play in 2024, "doing those same things." Until he comes back, he knows teammate Micah Parsons will more than hold things down on the Dallas defense. "You've got three men blocking one person. That means he's a monster, he's just not another person on the field."

The Cowboys' new head coach is already showing some of the traits that made his father an NFL coaching legend and favorite of his players. Team staffers say Brian personally passed out Whataburger breakfast sandwiches to every single employee at The Star one recent morning. Take a trip back through five decades of football through the eyes of the man now in the big office. It's an opportunity he's been preparing for literally his whole life.

The expected vote on a rule change was tabled this week, but the fight won't die anytime soon. Commissioner Roger Goodell has used a supposedly increased injury risk as a justification for considering banning the tush push, but there simply is no evidence to support that. Other rules changes did go through, moving touchbacks to the 35-yard line and giving both teams at least one possession in any overtime game. Also, instant replay is being expanded, and a virtual measurement system will take the lead in determining first downs over the chain gang.

Cowboys were also looking at Brissett, Lock before Milton trade :: Todd Archer
The Cowboys had interest in adding Jacoby Brissett in free agency, but he signed with Arizona. They also discussed the possibility of Drew Lock. Joe Milton is under contract for three years at much lower numbers. Betting on the upside on the Patriots' 6th round pick last year.
