It's been a while since the Dallas Cowboys have made a major move up the board on draft day. Their recent modus operandi has been to either take what has fallen to them, or to move backwards in an attempt to acquire more picks later in the draft. They moved back in 2024, 2021, and 2013, staying put every other year since except for in 2019 when they had already traded their first rounder for Wr Amari Cooper. The last time they made a move up was in 2012 when they bundled picks to nab LSU corner Morris Claiborne at No. 6. They've been scared off ever since.
But if the tea leaves are reading correctly, perhaps there's the ability to trade up at a discount this year, if a team identifies a prospect that stands out. There's no question that Colorado two-way star and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter stands out. In a rare instance during a mock draft on Pro Football Focus, Hunter escaped the first four picks of the simulation and sat on the draft board when the Jacksonville Jaguars were on the clock.
In this seven-round exercise, not only did Dallas move up to acquire Hunter, then then used several moves to drop outside of the top-100 but bring in several additional picks which gave them the ammo necessary to move around later and target specific Day 3 prospects their mock GM felt strongly about. The results are below.
Some teams might envision Hunter as just a corner to start his career, but the coach who molded him into an every-down two-way collegiate dynamo, Deion Sanders, was given his shot to be a two-way pro star in Dallas. The Cowboys will do the same out the gate, filling two needs with one selection.
Trade 3.98 to LA Rams for 3.101, 6.195
Martinez is one of several running backs the Cowboys have met with in the pre-draft process. His physical running style will do quite well with the vision new head coach Brian Schottenheimer sees as the best way to help QB Dak Prescott at this stage of his career.
The Central Arkansas star doesn't even reach 6-foot-1, but the sack master proved he is more than capable of using that to his leverage advantage as he dominated the Senior Bowl this year. His production at a lower level was proven to play against better competition and he looks like one of those outliers who will reward the pro team not scared off by height-weight thresholds.
Another back the Cowboys have met with, Smith is a speed merchant who excelled and help lead SMU's resurgence into the national spotlight. Smith has multiple play speeds and in this haul as a compliment with Martinez would give the Dallas offense an exciting combination that can mix things up against any defensive attack.
The Cowboys get Ewers to groom behind Prescott. The Texas native would certainly get the local fanbase going, and could serve as a great understudy who if he can be molded would serve as a future replacement or trade asset.
The All-American LB would fit into a rotation of top-tier athletes at the position.

David Walker from FCS school Central Arkansas did exactly what small school players have to do at the Senior Bowl: Kick ass and standout against competition they haven’t played against. Showed off his power all week. pic.twitter.com/FvPVhvk0Kd
