Not Norv Turner, although he IS a retread who washed as a Head Coach..

Nope, their next head coach is Wade Phillips.

Sources: Cowboys to name Phillips new head coachESPN.com

Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells ... Cowboys fans have been waiting for the next big name to lead a storied franchise. They might be surprised by the answer.

League and Cowboys sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will be named Dallas' head coach. Phillips traveled from San Diego to Dallas on Wednesday night after being told that he was their choice to replace the now-retired Parcells.

While contract details must still be worked out and a contract signed, a formal team announcement for Phillips could come as early as Thursday.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had reportedly been torn between hiring a defensive- or offensive-minded coach. Choosing Phillips answers that question and addresses issues with Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. The Cowboys have been running a 3-4 defense while Rivera is the architect of Chicago's successful 4-3 scheme. Phillips has had great success with the 3-4 defense throughout his career and helped the Chargers to a 14-2 regular-season record in 2006.

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner was widely regarded as the front-runner for the Cowboys job. The hiring of former Cowboys quarterback Jason Garrett might have doomed his candidacy. Garrett's role has not been formally defined, but he will likely be named Dallas' offensive coordinator. Turner is considered one of the premier play-callers in the league, and Jones might not have wanted to impede Garrett, who reportedly impressed the Cowboys owner in their interview.

Phillips spent much of Tuesday contacting coaches he wants to hire as assistants if he gets the Dallas job, sources told ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli.

"It would be an overstatement to say he's putting together a staff," one source said. "But he was just touching base with his guys, updating them as to where he thinks things stand, and trying to hold [potential staffers] together. He is still in the hunt."

On Wednesday, Indianapolis Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell became the 10th candidate to interview for a vacancy created when Parcells opted to retire on Jan. 21. Phillips interviewed for the job on Jan. 26.

Caldwell met with Jones and his son Stephen for more than six hours Wednesday and said he expected a decision to be made in "short order."

"I had a great time," Caldwell said of his interview for the Cowboys' head coaching vacancy. "I learned a lot about the organization."

In head coaching stints with Denver (1993-94) and Buffalo (1998-2000), Phillips compiled a 45-38 record, including the playoffs, and led his teams to three wild-card berths. He also served stints as interim head coach at New Orleans in 1985 and Atlanta in 2003.

Len Pasquarelli covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Rivera must not have been very good at his interviews. Maybe he said "smash-mouth" one too many times.

Actually, I think the fact that he was "totally surprised" when the Colts went to short passing in the Super Bowl says all you need to hear about his on-field strategic acumen. His defense is good because all the talent on that team is on the defense.

I think that Jones made a good decision, though. They've been drafting 3-4 personnel for the past three years on the defense. If they'd gotten Rivera, they would have had to start from scratch.

I agree. I wasn't impressed with Rivera's ability to adjust during the SB. The Colts' RBs were open in the passing game all day.

This is going to very hard on SD now that they lost both their DC and OC ...

I think this should change the odds on them winning the SB ..

Definitely! Losing one or the other not too terrible, but losing two good co-ordinators the same season is tough. Marty's going to be looking over his shoulder for the hook again this coming year.

As much as I hate it, this is a good hire for the Cowboys, possibly the best choice they could have made. Phillips is a decent coach who has a .542 winning percentage in the NFL with three playoff trips.

I know us fans want even more for our team but relative to what the Cardinals have done, Phillips record looks pretty good. Addtionally, as the article pointed out, Phillips history with the 3-4 makes it an easier transition than say Rivera would have.

Didn't New England win a Super Bowl after losing their two coordinators in one season? Of course, they'd won the Super Bowl the year before.

The most important thing is maintaining continuity. Hopefully they'd developed the assistants within the organization. It would be bad if they had to teach Rivers and the defense new systems starting in February.

By all indications, Phillips is keeping the seat warm for Jason Garrett.

According to a Yahoo Sports article, the main reason Norv Turner didn't get the job was because when they deemed Garrett ready to take over, they didn't think he'd be too fond of the idea. I really, to be honest, can't see how well that would sit over with ANY coach.

This one certainly is worth keeping an eye on.

An ESPN article went further -- saying that Turner didnt think Garrett was ready to be an OC, and had a someone else in mind, with Garrett being a QB coach or something.

I really dont think it matters -- history has proven that when Jerry J is the de-facto GM, the Cowboys get worse every year. When he has had a true football coach whose credentials demand significant majority of GM like say --J. Johnson and Parcels -- the Cowboys get better.

I think Wade is a lot more like Dave Campo and Chan Gailey and a lot less like Bill Parcels.

It's undoubtedly too late, but in my mind I keep trying for us to weasel our way into winding up with Rivera on the Cardinal coaching staff. It would be the full Trifecta - with Grimm making our offense tougher and Rivera doing likewise on the opposite side of the ball.

It would be a beautiful thing.

Philips also has the same number of playoff wins in his career as Dallas has had in the last decade...none.

Doesn't bother me too much. It's essentially a sign that Garrett will be taking over in a few years. Wade is a fantastic 3-4 coach who is respected by the football world / players. As much as I wanted Singletary or to a lesser extent Rivera, this is a decent hire for a few years.

And I'm practically giddy over the fact that Norv will NOT be the head coach.

I may be in the minority here but Rivera seems overrated to me. He lost 1 player (Tommie Harris) and that D was not the same. I know they beat the Hawks and the Saints but the Colts handled them.
Just my observation

Lost Mike Brown as well. For some reason, losing him kills their defense every time.

For those of you who hated Mike Sherman, I guess this proves that there are worse choices the Cardinals could have made

Rivera's totally overrated. After the Super Bowl, he was quoted as saying that he was "totally surprised" that the Colts went to a quick passing offense once the Bears showed the Cover-2. He had no plan to counter-act it, even if that's exactly what the Colts did to the Patriots two weeks before.

Ron Rivera is totally overrated as a head coaching candidate and will be a failure wherever he ends up. Snake-oil salesman.

I love Jerry Jones! :doi:
It seems that Al Davis has someone to fill his shoes after he's gone!
