Just got this email from Cox.

Dear Cox High Speed Internet Customer,
You Deserve More!
We are pleased to announce that we are now providing you more of what matters when choosing a High Speed Internet provider – SPEED! In order to provide you with the best value in High Speed Internet, Cox is increasing the speed of your Preferred Package High Speed Internet service. Now you can download at up to 4Mbps and upload at up to 512Kbps at no additional cost. This means you can surf the web and download music 30% faster than last week, or up to 135 times faster than dial-up. This speed increase has automatically taken place beginning August 10th and there is no action required on your part.

4Mbps? SWEET.

How much have they raised our rates in the past few years to give us this higher speed? Curious to see information about it.

While they have for years given us these emails that our speeds were increasing they didn't raise prices for me until about 4 months ago. I now pay $45.99 which is up from $39.99 that I paid for almost 5 years. They are now advertising speeds of up to 10mbps although since all this has happened I have now seen a decrease in the speeds I am able to achieve. I am typically only getting about 3mbps. I am thinking of switching to Qwest DSL.

Have you stayed with the same tier?

Would you be interested in paying less for a slower connection?

Possibly. I think that they could give users an option for an internet solution in the sub $30 a month range to compete with DSL prices and offer comparable speeds.

You would be lucky to get 2Mbps with QWEST. You should do an address lookup and see how far away you are from a CO. The closer you are, the faster speeds you will receive.

Yeah you are probably correct. Although Qwest has been doing alot of upgrading and adding CO's from what I understand. I may look into it but I am not a fan of Qwest.

After doing technical support for both DSL and cable companies, I will still pay a premium for cable vs. DSL.

Here in VA I've noticed a few commercials for Verizon FiOS, which is fiber optic based. Pricing is much better than cable (at least right now). Unfortunately it's not available at my place right now.

Consumer reports reviewed them and they got the highest marks across the board.... from customer service to reliability

3Mbps using Cox HSI. I sure better not be paying for 7Mbps.

Thanks for the link.
