Maybe, but you have to think about all the alternatives fans have in Winnipeg compared to what we have here.

I'm sure the franchise and the NHL thought about this before they moved here, right? And the notoriously fickle Phoenix fans? And that the Valley is tremendously spread out?

If they start winning, fans will come. It's actually kind of good in a way - it forces teams to try to actually be winners if they want to get ticket and merchandise revenue.

all they have to do is win - the organization acts in a first class manner, games are very fan friendly, prices & promotion are there - the building is first rate and the westgate complex is coming along nicely as a destination

'08 Cubs, you are off on your facts. Attendance may be lower, but people are still coming to the games. Last Saturday Night's game against the L.A. Kings had an attendance of 14,631 (83.6% full), according to the box score.

I do agree that the actual turnout is low, but then I went to a Capitals/Senators game on Monday night in Washington D.C. The Verizon Center was even less filled than any Coyotes game I've been to this year. Entire sections were empty. What did the box score say for this game? Attendance: 10,845 (58.1% full)

Here is the attendance from all the games last Saturday. Saturday night is a good gauge because usually there is better turnout than during the week. Here's the games from Nov. 4th:

Washington at Philadelphia, Attendance: 19,564 (100.3% full)

New Jersey at Motreal, Attendance: 21,273 (100.0% full)
Columbus at Detroit, Attendance: 20,066 (100.0% full)
Toronto at Buffalo, Attendance: 18,690 (100.0% full)
Vancouver at Colorado, Attendance: 18,007 (100.0% full)
Pittsburgh at San Jose, Attendance: 17,496 (100.0% full)

Los Angeles at Phoenix, Attendance: 14,631 (83.6% full)
Atlanta at NY Islanders, Attendance: 12,394 (76.1% full)
Tampa Bay at Boston, Attendance: 14,169 (76.1% full)
Calgary at St. Louis, Attendance: 12,097 (63.6% full)

Whiile over half of the arenas sold out, Phoenix fared better than Long Island, Boston, and St. Louis.

In order to move the team first somebody would have to buy it and then write another nine figure check to break the lease with Glendale. In short, it isn't going to happen. No, the team would not be doing better back in Winnipeg. Attendance in Winnipeg was below the league average 12 years in a row, and their average never hit 14,000 in a single season. The lowest the average attendance has been in Phoenix is only 600 seats lower than the highest the average attendance ever was in Winnipeg. Its a bit disappointing to see the team draw a bit over 14,000 a night (24th in the league), but given how horrendous the team has been (even when they win they look bad) and the fact that there are several teams doing worse at the game, it isnt that bad.

I was at the Caps/Sens game last night also. I sat in Section 111, Row H, right on the center line (the best seats I could find from the scalpers outside). Pretty good game for the Capitals.

I live in Phoenix and working on a project in D.C. Next week is my last week on the project and traveling to D.C., so I'm looking forward to the Caps/Penguins on Monday Night!! Looking forward to seeing Crosby for the first time.

I'll be at the Coyotes/Stars on Saturday in Phoenix.

Yeah caps/pens is almost always a good time. back when the caps were drawing better a few years ago with Jagr and Bondra the Pens games would be a full house with a strong mix of both teams fans. Would get really rowdy in there.

I was fairly close to you the other night, sec 115 row L. Two fights on the ice right in front of me. Erskine got his ass kicked in the first one.

That Erskine fight was pretty good, but you're right, Erskine was hitting a lot of helmet. The Brashear fight was pretty weak.

Ovechekin was really flying last night and breaking sticks.

I've been staying at the J.W. Marriott on 14th and Pennsylvania. Kind of a fun walk 6 blocks down to the Verizon Center. City life is certainly different than what I'm used to in Phoenix.

Ovechkin is simply sick, even if you can't see the number on the jersey you know when he gets the puck because he's moving 3x faster than anyone else on the ice.

Interesting fact about Ovechkin is that both his parents (father and mother) were world class Russian athletes. One of them won a medal in the Olympics. I think one played basketball and the other soccer, but I'm not totally sure.

It's funny listening to Canadians bitch about what a horrible travesty it is that the Jets moved to Phoenix, but their numbers were less then what the Yotes draw nightly.

What's that say for your "hockey hungry" market? Eh?

Truth be told, Phoenix is still growing yearly as a hockey community. Going against the Suns, the top act in town, isn't easy, but the Yotes over the years have done a fine job of maintaining a steady fan base, and once they get some footing and become a playoff mainstay again, more will show.
