Press conference is set for 3pm today. I sure hope they do not hire Pat Quinn. If you thought the Coyotes were already too dependent on over the hill players then Pat Quinn's moves would make last year's team look like a bunch of kindergarteners.

I guess I'm a little surprised that it was both, not just one.

Steve Tambellini is always a name that gets mentioned when discussing future NHL GMs. He's spent the better part of 15 years with the Vancouver Canucks in various hockey operations and player personnel positions, and is currently their Assistant GM and VP. He has also held similar positions with Team Canada so there is probably a familiarity with Gretzky as well. The Coyotes can't talk to him right now due to the Canucks being in the playoffs but I would guess he is high on their wishlist.

The Coyotes also fired Assistant GM Laurence Gilman today. Pat Conacher who coaches the farm team is probably next once San Antonio finishes their season in a couple of days.

"Shumway told The Republic he, Gretzky and others have compiled a list of "seven or eight" candidates for the GM job, but all of them currently are employed by other NHL teams that are competing in the playoffs. Shumway said the Coyotes would contact those teams and ask their permission to speak to the candidates, whom he did not name.

Rumors already are circulating that Vancouver assistant GM Steve Tambellini, New York Rangers assistant GM Don Maloney and Detroit assistant GM Jim Nill are on Phoenix's list of candidates.

Shumway and Gretzky both said they wanted their next GM to be someone who is not a close friend of Gretzky's.

"Let's put it this way," Gretzky said. "It's probably a benefit to the franchise and to the person who comes in that I don't know him."

The Coyotes would like to have their new GM and his staff in place well before the NHL draft in June."
