The Phoenix Coyotes entered Friday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks realizing the Canucks had an explosive offense and possessed one of the top lines in the National Hockey League.

Despite the advanced scouting report, Phoenix allowed two goals just 51 seconds apart in the first period as Vancouver took a quick 2-0 lead on their way to their second win in as many nights in front of 12,137 at America West Arena._ The loss extended Phoenix’s winless streak to seven games (0-4-3) and dropped their record to 3-4-3-0 on the season._

“Vancouver is a quality hockey club and they don’t give you much,” said Coyotes head coach Bob Francis._ “When you spot them a couple of early goals, you are making things difficult for yourself.__ They came out strong in the first period and that definitely played a factor in the outcome of the game.”

The Coyotes entered the game struggling to score the game’s first goal recently, while the Canucks had opened the scoring in their previous 10 consecutive games._ Vancouver made it 11 straight when Trevor Linden scored his third goal of the season at 8:16 of the first period giving his team a 1-0 lead.

“The first goal I allowed was a bad goal, I kind of over-reacted to it and the puck bounced under my pad,” said Coyotes goaltender Sean Burke, who finished the night with 27 saves._ “It was unfortunate because it lets the team down._ We sagged a bit after that, but we were at home and we needed to battle harder.”

Immediately following Linden’s goal, Coyotes center Mike Sillinger was whistled for tripping and Vancouver took advantage and expanded their lead to 2-0 when Jiri Slegr scored on the power play at 9:07 of the opening period.

“They played well, but we didn’t do anything at all,” said Coyotes captain Shane Doan._ “You can’t fall behind a team that talented and we found that out tonight._ It was a frustrating loss, but we need to come out hard tomorrow.”

The Coyotes started the second period on a power play when Canucks left wing Jarkko Ruutu received a minor penalty for hooking with eight seconds remaining in the first period._ Phoenix had an opportunity to gain some momentum and they capitalized on the man advantage cutting their deficit in half when Ladislav Nagy scored his team leading fifth goal of the season at 1:05 of the second period.

“We came out a lot better in the second period than we did in the opening 20 minutes,” said Doan, who was voted the game’s third star._ “We need to find ways to start playing desperate right from the opening of the game and not wait until later in the contest.”

Vancouver regained their two-goal lead at 6:08 of the second period when Brendan Morrison tallied his fourth marker of the season assisted by Todd Bertuzzi giving the Canucks a 3-1 advantage.

“Morrison’s goal was frustrating because we had just gotten one goal back,” said Doan._ “We were starting to carry the play in the second period, but you have to give Vancouver credit, they played a very solid game.”

In the third period, the Canucks added an insurance goal when Markus Naslund snapped a wrist shot past Burke at 5:13 of the final period extending their lead to 4-1.

The Coyotes will now head to Los Angeles for a game against the Kings on Saturday night at Staples Center._ The game will be broadcast on WB6, 93.3 KDKB (FM) and 1060 KDUS (AM) and game time is 8:30 p.m. Arizona time.
