Ten years after leaving Winnipeg for Phoenix, the Jets-turned-Coyotes franchise plancs to head back to its hometown for the first time to play an exhibition game next season.

A news conference to announce the game, which will be played Sept. 17 vs. the Stanley Cup finals-bound Edmonton Oilers at Winnipeg's MTS Center is scheduled later this week.

It will be interesting to see the reaction the Coyotes get when they take the ice.

Will the Winnipeg fans embrace them as returning favorites or hold a grudge over their exit and boo them off the ice?

Captain Shane Doan, the only player on the Coyotes roster who played for the team in Winnipeg before it moved to Phoenix, will likely get a nice ovation.

The Winnipeg Jets played at the Winnipeg Arena from 1972-1996. That building was destroyed earlier this year.

The MTS Center opened in December 2004.

I can't imagine anything but a chorus of boos all night.

What's worse, the Republic headline actually read:

Coyotes to Return to Winnipeg

Made it sound like they were moving back.
