RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes acquired center Krystofer Kolanos, a former first-round draft choice of Phoenix, and traded right wing Pavel Brendl to the Coyotes.
In another move, Carolina sent forward Colin Forbes to Washington for forward Stephen Peat.
Phoenix also swapped minor-league centers with Philadelphia, acquiring Eric Chouinard for Kiel McLeod.
Kolanos, 24, has been with San Antonio of the AHL since the Coyotes claimed him off waivers from Edmonton on Dec. 19. Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford assigned him to Lowell, the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate.
"Krystofer is a skilled center who adds depth to our organization at an important position," Rutherford said. "He has NHL experience at a young age and will help Lowell immediately."
Kolanos had two goals and an assist in nine games with Phoenix before the Coyotes initially waived him in November. Edmonton claimed him on Nov. 11, and he appeared in six games without scoring before the Oilers released him.
Kolanos played his 109 other NHL games with Phoenix, the team that drafted him in 2000. The 6-foot-3, 206-pound forward played in 57 games as a rookie (2001-02), recording career-highs of 11 goals and 11 assists.
But he got a concussion in the team's first exhibition game of the 2002-03 season against Anaheim. Kolanos missed the first 80 games that season and played in just 41 the next.
He has 17 goals and 18 assists in his career.
Peat played in 130 games with the Capitals over four seasons, scoring eight goals with two assists and 234 penalty minutes.
Forbes has been playing in the AHL and will be assigned to Washington's affiliate in Hershey, Pa. He played 45 games with the Capitals from 2002-04.
Chouinard had seven goals and seven assists in 24 games with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL and will go into the Coyotes' farm system at San Antonio. A first-round draft pick by Montreal in 1998, he has 11 goals and 11 assists in 90 NHL games with Montreal, Philadelphia and Minnesota.
McLeod has yet to debut in the NHL, spending three years in the AHL.
A pair of roster moves. I am not sure if either of these players is good enough to play in the NHL, so these trades really do not matter. It only looks like they are trying to catch lightning in a bottle and hope that a change of scenery will improve these players.
