I think they should put Chris Young on the DL to let him heal completely and bring Upton up for that time just to see what he has. You never know what can happen. Worst case he goes back down and continues to tear it up.

That would require putting Justin Upton on the 40 man roster which would prematurely start the arbitration clock on him. Thus, he'd be a free agent a year earlier than if they kept him where he is. That is a pretty hefty price for what would almost assuredly be a brief sneak peek.

Good point, but I would imagine that at this point he would be a September call up. Wouldn't they have to do the same at that point?

Yes, he would have to be on the 40-man roster, but time would not count towards being arbitration eligibility.

Thanks, now it all makes sense.

I told you it was a crazy idea.

I think you want to leave Upton where he's at. He's put up video game numbers, but he's still upside down in walks to strikeouts. He's got 3 walks to 14 strikeouts in AA right now. Of course, he's hitting .341 with a .773 slugging percentage, but he's probably not ready to deal with a Major League breaking ball yet.

I don't know anything about the Southern League. Is it a pitchers or hitters league? I know the Texas League tended to inflate hitting stats somewhat, but I was never sure if it was the parks or the lack of pitchers that came through there.

Southern League is a huge pitcher's league.

Crazy idea for sure. Let the kid progress naturally...no need to rush at all. In fact, that could turn into a huge blunder no matter how sure a thing Upton may seem to be. Ease him along.
