Crennel would take a QB, but only Mr. Right

INDIANAPOLIS Romeo Crennel embraces the idea of drafting a quarterback. But only Mr. Right.
"If there is a franchise quarterback," the Browns head coach said Friday at the NFL Combine, "I think that we have to talk about it. We have to determine what can help our team the quickest."
Rookie QBs tend to lose games and put coaches on hot seats. Crennel, whose cushion already is burning, noted that Matt Leinart "came along pretty good" as a rookie starter for the 2006 Cardinals.
Rookie running backs tend to help sooner. Thus the Browns are closely linked with Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson.
"That's the thing we need to look at. ... How can we make the quickest progress?" Crennel said. "This is gonna be my third year. I think everybody's gonna want more progress this year than the last two years."
Of quarterbacks already on the roster, Crennel said Charlie Frye has "a leg up" on Derek Anderson. Crennel then read a laundry list of what the Browns need most.
"The quarterback play has to improve," he said. "The line has to block better. We have to catch better. We have to run better. Then we have to play better defense overall."
One priority, he said, is getting players who will help the Browns improve their sickly turnover ratio. Crennel also said guard and cornerback are the most pressing concerns heading into free agency. The signing period starts March 2.
Prospects for an impact guy improve now that the Browns draft at No. 3 overall.
"It puts you in a little more appealing position to trade back," General Manager Phil Savage said. "We felt pretty good about our top five coming in. Now that we're in the top three, we'll feel even better."
Savage has plenty of detailed notes on the top guys.
Of Quinn, he said, "He looks like a quarterback. He's got a chiseled body. He spins the ball well.
"He's very impressive throwing. He's played under a pro coach, under the scrutiny of national television every single game. ... He's a player we've spent an awful lot of time evaluating."

Doesn't it seam if Weis really thought Quinn was gonna be a great QB, Crennel would pick him. Maybe he brought him up for the Coach hotseat comment.
