Bordow: Opposing teams hearing hometown crowd loud and clear

Scott Bordow, Tribune Columnist
Here are three words you never associated with the Cardinals in the past: Home. Field. Advantage.

Only four times (1994, 1996, 1998, 2004) in 18 seasons at Sun Devil Stadium did Arizona have a winning record at home.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt remembers coming to town as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers and not having to worry about the crowd disrupting his team.

“It was quiet,” Whisenhunt said. “Noise wasn’t an issue.”

It is now.

University of Phoenix Stadium and the 64,000 fans who pack it on Sundays have given the Cardinals an honest-to-goodness home-field advantage.

Arizona is 3-1 at home this year, and all three victories have come against teams with winning records. It suffered its only loss when quarterback Kurt Warner was injured in the first quarter of the Oct. 14 game against Carolina.

“The fans are helping us win games,” team president Michael Bidwill said.

Obviously, the roar of the crowd isn’t the only reason Arizona suddenly has become inhospitable at home. The Cardinals sold out every game last year at University of Phoenix Stadium and were 3-5.

It helps to have a quality coaching staff and motivated players.

But there’s no doubt the energy inside the dome has done wonders for Arizona.

The crowd noise was directly responsible for the Cardinals’ 23-20 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the home opener. Coach Mike Holmgren said a botched exchange between quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and running back Shaun Alexander with less than two minutes left — the Cardinals recovered the fumble, and Neil Rackers kicked the game-winning field goal — was attributed to Alexander not being able to hear Hasselbeck’s audible.

“It was so loud,” Holmgren said.

When’s the last time you heard that about a Cardinals’ crowd?

More tangible evidence:

In 2005, the Cardinals’ final season at Sun Devil Stadium, opponents were whistled for 10 false starts in eight games.

This year, in just four games, Arizona’s foes have been flagged for false starts 12 times.

That’s hardly a coincidence.

“They’re creating such an atmosphere that the opposing offenses aren’t able to concentrate as much as they can and they’re making mistakes,” Bidwill said.

Defensive end Darnell Dockett said both San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis and Seattle defensive tackle Rocky Bernard told him how difficult it was to play in the Cardinals’ new digs.

“When teams have to waste timeouts just because they can’t communicate on the field, that’s all because of the fans,” wide receiver Anquan Boldin said. “We have nothing to do with it.”

Boldin was asked how big of a difference it is to play before 64,000 screaming Cardinal fans inside University of Phoenix Stadium and 35,000 fans at Sun Devil Stadium, 10,000 of whom were cheering on the other team.

The look on his face — and his terse response — said it all: “You can’t even compare the two.”

The fans’ fervor is not only making life miserable for opponents, it’s giving the Cardinals an emotional lift.

The empty seats in Tempe were disheartening. The sea of red in Glendale is inspiring.

“It energizes our team,” Whisenhunt said. “Our guys get excited about it.”

The San Francisco 49ers step into the dome today. Sometime during the game, their offense will break the huddle, walk to the line of scrimmage and quarterback Trent Dilfer won’t be able to hear a thing.

Noise pollution.

Ain’t it grand?

That's it. When Kurt Warner calls his final timeout in the middle of the 3rd quarter, I'm blaming the fans too. All of us. :D

The crowd in section 118 in the third quarter was a bunch of vaginas. They couldn't cheer and the fact that some people told me to SHUT UP when I told them to STAND UP!! means they are the douchebags of the game...and they had a lot of competition from the team on the field.

The home crowd was TERRIBLE this game, IMO. Terrible. One of the worst I've seen.

Section 117 itself has some guys who think clapping is sufficient, or that getting loud is somehow "not cool" but I really don't care what they think. We get loud as hell and that's all I care about.

But half that endzone is not loud. There are a bunch of hand-sitting ******* and they need to work on their aggression, because they need to bring it and currently they are NOT.

:( That blows. I was screaming at home, hoping people at the game were doing the same.

If you are at the game, have working legs and lungs and dont cheer your ass off on defensive third-downs, pack up your ish and go home.

I'm sorry...I think it was 116. It was the one to the left of 117.

This was Gee's section...damn it Gee...why was your section acting like a bunch of *******? Seriously.. I think a 13 year old told me to be quiet when I tried to get your section to get on their feet in the third. Plus there was some dude with glasses in about the 20th row seat about 18 or so who looked like he was dead...or thinking about the kids he'd snatch in the next few hours.

The crowd as a whole was good during "important" downs. I just wish they understood that they could show up during important downs like 1-4 on any defensive stand.

My only time in UoP was the first game last season. My wife's friend's husband went with me... I should have gone alone. It was the first regular season game in the new house. I went hoarse shouting because there were so many 9er fans there. I was very disappointed in the way the fans represented. It sounds like the douches are making their way from Chase to UoP. One thing that has always bugged me about my Phoenix fandom has been the fans. Grow some friggin balls Phoenix. Jesus Christ.

Dont forget the US Airways bypass route. Suns fans have been called out by the coach!

The first series on defense in the third quarter, 118 was dead...117 in front of me probably was too but I focus now on other sections trying to get them up and I seriously, no ****, got flipped off by a 13 year old kid telling me to sit down and shut up...kid in a fitz jersey.

I know it is hard to get into the game in the third quarter, but if a guy in redi is telling you to get off your ass and cheer your reaction should be "ghell fuggin yeah!!" and not "hey, ef you dude."

Our 122 section was pretty loud. There was this little boy in the seat in front of me giving me a dirty look, every time I yelled at a play. If that were my kid.... wow. Those were some of the dirtiest looks I have ever seen.

I thought near the end of the game and in OT, the crowd was as loud as I have ever heard there.

i sit in 121, half of them wont make a noise or stand unless a player is pointing at them telling them to. Me and my 2 buddies stand and make crazy noise the whole time on D but it is almost futile at time. Theres even a colonel clunk jackass mustache guy in front who only stand on offense and is always yelling and motioning for the crowd to stand and get loud when we are on offense. The fans in that stadium make me embarressed for my team, why couldnt I have been born and raised in a real sports town?

I wasn't calling you out...I was wondering why your section was sitting. Obviously, you have a huge effect on your section because I never see that area sitting down when you are there.

I think I'm going to chalk this up to the holiday and having a bunch of new faces in the stands because regulars couldn't make it. It's the only thing that makes sense. Either that or Gee has WAAAAY more impact on that section than even I thought.

Its a dog sleeping with a drool bubble on his tongue.. The crowd seemed lazy yesterday.. Ron Wolfley kept commenting on how the crowd needed to get into the game.. I could barley hear the crowd yesterday on the radio except a few times..
