Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly hopes to tap the accelerator on his recovery from Tommy John surgery this week. Smyly said he plans to throw a bullpen session Wednesday in Arizona and anticipates throwing a simulated game this weekend at Wrigley Field. “I’m going to play it by ear,” Smyly said. “I think I may start a (minor-league) rehab assignment if all goes well.” That would be encouraging news for the Cubs as they look to add starting pitching. Smyly, who is 12 months removed from surgery, has thrown up to three innings in simulated sessions. Furthermore, President Theo Epstein said on July 6 that Smyly will be stretched out after being projected in the offseason to perform only as a short reliever
