Cubs say they might leave Mesa for improved facilities

Envious of newer spring training complexes in Glendale and Goodyear, the Chicago Cubs are demanding improvements to their outdated minor league training facility at Fitch Park in Mesa.

In a briefing with Chicago reporters on Wednesday, Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney also said the team wants more seating than now available at Hohokam Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 13,100.

Kenney also said the team is being wooed by an undisclosed Florida city. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on its Web site that it may be Sarasota, Fla., which will lose the Cincinnati Reds to Goodyear next year.

Cubs are one of the biggest draws. There are needed for spring training. Otherwise, this then becomes a Dodger town for 2 months.

You guys seem a bit myopic, the Cubs leaving the Valley would be an economic blow for the Valley and the Cactus league in general. How are Cubs fans really bothering anyone, who the hell would ever spend their free time in Mesa? If you stay out of that sea of dilapidated RVs and trailer parks, youll never run into them.

The Cactus league has done a good job in recent years growing itself and I hope it continues. I hope the Rockies and D'backs move up to the Valley, preferably on the East side or in Central or South Phoenix if they can find the land. I'd also like to see the Cactus League make aggressive moves to get the Houston Astros and St Louis Cardinals here, theyre the last teams west of the rockies that we don't have. Spring Training Cubs-Cardinals games would sell a boat load of tickets, and I bet Royals-Cards games would do alright as well.

We just don't like annoying Scrubs fans, and the fawning LOCAL papers that kiss their asses.

The City of Mesa could f'up a cup of coffee. Losing the Cubs would be a huge blow, but the city has no revenue to speak of because they have tried so hard to appease everyone that shares a certain religious faith.

Mesa went against the Stadium with that fat chick beating the drum because they didn't want their neighborhood to go to pot. Guess what? Riverview is a joke and just caters to low income families, crime rates are through the roof (have a co-worker who lives right there). Meanwhile, Glendale is just raking in the dough.

They had an opportunity to submit a proposal to Ikea, but didn't want to make any tax concessions. Guess what? Tempe makes a KILLING in tax revenue from Ikea. They ended up giving a sweet, sweet deal to Bass Pro Shop instead that probably pales in comparison to what Ikea was asking for.

I have some other rants but it would call out a specific religious group that makes special WINK WINK deals like the plot of land that Brown and Brown Chevrolet got in downtown Mesa for 1 dollar. Yep, multi-acres of land right on Main street sold to a businessman who happens to share the same beliefs with the city council for 1 dollar.

Here's the story if you want to get upset: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/052/RipOff0052067.htm

Screw Mesa.

Lining pockets in politics...NO! Nothing at all surprises me any more. That's why the president is even into sports these days. It's a haven from that annoying American and International custom. It's who you pay off.

Good stuff Ryan, I doubt you'd have any luck finding anyone who would disagree that Mesa, AZ is the worst run, most boring, crappiest large city in the country. Its a horrific horizontal slum, everything about it is a nightmare.

I don't want to touch the religious aspect of your comments.

But did you know that AutoNation wouldn't allow Brown and Brown Chevy to use the Power name when they bought them out because of a pending lawsuit against the Brown group.

When Henry Brown made his son the GM, it downgraded their whole operation. Coming into his employees' offices, sitting at their desks and putting his feet up on their desks was juvenile behavior and not well respected within the organization.

Yes, I worked for a short while for a broker who worked out of Brown and Brown.

Well you have very peculiar taste. Or maybe eating most of your meals at an Applebees/Chilis and living in a house that looks like every other house with in 10 miles is A-OK with you. Personally I need a city with more excitement, culture and diversity. At the very least I think you could agree Mesa is the definition of 'milquetoast'.

I have eaten at one Applebees (in Gilbert) and never eaten at Chili's. :D

We like our neighborhood, our home is still worth way more than we paid for it, no HOA, we like the shopping and restaurants that are close to our neighborhood. We are not partiers and could care less about any nightlife. Don't really care what others say about the city. If it's not for you - fine, move on and focus on your own wonderful little city.

So BIMBWIS - are you willing to spend tax dollars to keep the Cubs?

I lived in Mesa from 1976 to 1985. It went from a very good place to live then to below average today, compared to other valley cities.

Why not? They've brought how much money to the city and the Valley in general?

Fixing up Fitch and adding seats to Hohokam...get it done.

BTW: I never got on board the whole "I don't like your team or its fans so I'll call you "Scrubs" rather than "Cubs," or "Bums" rather than "Suns," etc." Really? C'mon! Maybe when you're 12 or something, but grown men? :lame:
