Excluding the steroid controversy and focusing on the numbers, what players have HOF credentials and what young players can you see getting there;

Combing through baseball-reference.com, I came up with;

Hitters
Barry Bonds
Sammy Sosa
Mark McGuire
Rafael Palmiero (500 HR)
Ken Griffey Jr
Frank Thomas (500 HR)
Alex Rodriguez
Derek Jeter
Manny Ramierez (500 HR)
Craig Biggio (3000 hits)

Pitchers
Roger Clemens
Mariano Rivera
Greg Maddux
Tom Glavine
Randy Johnson
Trevor Hoffman
Pedro Martinez
John Smoltz
Curt Schilling (?)

Youngish
Ichiro
Albert Pujols

No Randy Johnson? He's a lock.. But if Luis Gonzalez can get to 3000 hits in the next couple of years thats definitly a straight line to the Hall.. He currently has 2455.. He could do it..

For Gonzo to get 3000 it would take 4 more seasons going by his yearly hit average.. Dunno if he has 4 more left in him..

Others to consider:

Gary Sheffield - 2478 hits, 475 HR's
Chipper Jones
Jim Thome - 484 HR's

With the current long-ball-heavy era I don't think 500 HRs should be the automatic ticket it once was. I just don't think of guys like Palmiero and Thome as among-the-best-of-all-time kind of players.

I'm going to include Mike Piazza on this list. Where his defense was woefully inadequate, the guy was the premier power hitting catcher of his time, and perhaps one of the best in that aspect ever to play the game.

He was also the first batter to ever face Byung-Hyun Kim & struck out...

Sorry, I love that bit of trivia...

Also don't forget Rafael Palmeroid also had 3000 hits for your list. If McGwire and Sosa don't get in, I don't think Palmeiro does. On the flip side, if they both do, then I guess he would get in as well. I just find it disturbing that Palmeroid has a chance to get in while a guy like Pete Rose has went all of this time without even being considered. If you ask me, being caught on steriods is far worse than betting on your own team. If he had bet against his team maybe we're looking at a different story but I mean come on the guy has paid his time and he deserves to be in the HoF.
